Fabugais-Inaba runs her win total to three, while Koprivova claims the 200 Back

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Oct. 7, 2017) – Rutgers swimming and diving completed its first dual meet of the 2017-18 season with a 199-116 setback at Florida Gulf Coast following the morning session on Saturday.

Sophomore Alexandra Fabugais-Inaba took first in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:01.80, her third event win of the weekend, and in exciting fashion with just a 0.13-second cushion in front of FGCU's Liz Zeiger. With victories in the 200-, 500- and 1,650-yard freestyle events, along with her participation in two second place relay swims, Fabugais-Inaba racked up a meet-high 30 points over the two days. FGCU's Petra Halmai was second in point accumulation with 27.

Junior Vera Koprivova touched in first in her specialty, the 200-yard backstroke, for her first event victory of the new campaign. Her time of 2:03.69 was one second faster than the second place finisher from the Eagles.

The Saturday morning session started off with a flurry of energy and a tight race between the "A" teams in the 400-yard medley relay. Florida Gulf Coast edged Rutgers by 0.36 seconds in 3:50.46, with Koprivova (back), senior Larissa Neilan (breast), sophomore Federica Greco (fly) and sophomore Clare Lawlor (free) taking four second-place points.

Neilan earned second place points individually shortly after in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 1:05.44 – less than a second behind FGCU's winning mark of 1:04.72. Greco also claimed second place in the 400-yard individual medley in another neck-and-neck race, falling by one-tenth of a second with a time of 4:28.61. That time significantly bested her fastest time from 2016-17 of 4:37.21.

Rutgers closed out the meet with a second place finish from the "A" squad in the 200-yard freestyle relay, with Fabugais-Inaba, Lawlor, senior Karli Rymer and sophomore Meghan Moses combining for a time of 1:36.71.

The Scarlet Knights have a three-week layoff from competition before a tri-meet and quad meet the weekend of Oct. 27 in Illinois. The University of Illinois hosts Rutgers and Northwestern in a Big Ten tri-match on Oct. 27 before a quad at Northwestern with Illinois-Chicago and Chicago on Oct. 28.
