BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Rutgers wrestling team placed three finalists in the Oklahoma-Brockport Gold Tournament, held Saturday in Brockport, N.Y., finishing with a team total of 86.5. Oklahoma finished in first place with a team total of 177.5.
"Obviously we have along way to go, but I was excited for our kids to get out and wrestle," said head coach Scott Goodale. "It was a pretty good tournament. We have a lot of work to do, but I thought our conditioning was good and we competed hard. We just have to do a better job of scoring points in certain weight classes."
Three Scarlet Knights reached the finals of their respective weight classes. In the 141-pound division, redshirt senior Steve Adamcsik (Chester, N.J.) fell to Zach Bailey of Oklahoma 6-4. In the 174-pound class, Mike Whalen (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.) lost 6-1 to Jeff James of Oklahoma. Lamar Brown (Red Bank, N.J.) reached the finals of the 197-pound class, falling to Joel Flaggert of Oklahoma by way of major decision 12-4.
Jack Barrett (Metuchen, N.J.) also performed well, falling in the consolation final of the 149-pound class, 6-4 to Kent State's Clint Sponseller. DJ Russo (Netcong, N.J.) finished sixth in the heavyweight division.
Rutgers next competes in the Navy Classic on Saturday, Nov. 17, in Annapolis, Md., starting at 9 a.m.
