NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - The Rutgers University Wrestling team released its schedule for the 2007-08 season, first-year head coach Scott Goodale announced. For the eighth consecutive year, the Scarlet Knights will begin the season at the Oklahoma-Brockport Gold Tournament in Brockport, N.Y. Matches are scheduled to begin on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 10:00 a.m.
The next weekend, RU will travel to Annapolis, Md. to compete in the Navy Classic on Nov. 17. Nine days later, Rutgers will compete in its first dual meet of the year against Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio on Nov. 26. The Buckeyes finished last season ranked 15th nationally.
Rutgers continues its road trip the next weekend in Pennsylvania, taking on perennial EIWA power Lehigh in Bethlehem on Nov. 30 before taking part in the Penn State Open the following day. The Big Ten's Nittany Lions were nationally ranked last year as well, at #11. The next weekend the Scarlet Knights will finish up the road trip with a match against Maryland on Dec. 8 in College Park, Md.
The first home match of the season will be on Jan. 4, against Lock Haven and Wagner, at the College Ave Gym at 3:00 p.m. The next day, Jan. 5, Rutgers will travel to take on rival Princeton at 3:00 p.m. in an EIWA contest.
The Scarlet Knights return home on Jan. 10 against EIWA member East Stroudsburg, in a match that will begin at 7:00 p.m., before traveling up the Hudson to take on EIWA member Army as well as the US Merchant Marine Academy in West Point, N.Y. on Jan. 13 at 2:00 p.m.
Rutgers will then be pitted against conference rivals Brown and Franklin & Marshall in a home match on Jan. 19 at 12 noon. The next weekend, the Scarlet Knights have a match-up against Boston University on Jan. 26 at 12 noon in Boston, Mass., followed by a match at Rider University Feb. 2 against the Broncs and the Golden Eagles of Clarion University at 3:00 p.m. in Lawrenceville, N.J.
Rutgers will end the regular season with a three-match homestand, beginning by hosting American University Feb. 10 at 12 noon. Next, they will take on Navy on Feb. 15 at 7:00 p.m. The Midshipmen, fellow members of the EIAW, were ranked 21st in the country last year. Finally, Rutgers will conclude the regular season on Feb. 21 with a match against Drexel at 7:00 p.m.
The 2008 EIWA Championships will take place in Lancaster, Pa. on March 7 and 8, with matches beginning both days at 11:00 a.m. The NCAA championships will be held from March 20-22 in St. Louis, Mo.The Scarlet Knights posted a 10-6 record in their last season under long-time head coach John Sacchi. Rutgers finished 11th at the EIWA championships, and had a 5-3 record against conference opponents.
