  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers University wrestling team fell to in-state rival Rider University, 24-15, on Wednesday night at the College Avenue Gymnasium.

The Scarlet Knights (8-4, 4-3 EIWA) got wins from Ryan Jablonski (Norristown, Pa.), Dan Hilt (Manalapan, N.J.), Matt Pletcher (Eastampton, N.J.) and Mike D’Amico (Kenilworth, N.J.).

“I think the match-ups were really in Rider’s favor,” said head coach John Sacchi. “We made some mistakes, but at most of the positions it was their experience against our youth. We’re getting better, but we have work to do. We’re going to continue to make improvements.”

Jablonski gave the Scarlet Knights an early 6-0 lead with a pin at 125 pounds over Rider’s Tommy Lorenzo. Jablonski got an early takedown and turned Lorenzo, earning three backpoints prior to the pin. In the second match of the night, Hilt won a 3-1 decision. Following a scoreless first round, Hilt scored on an escape from the defensive position and a takedown with 51 seconds remaining in the middle period. In the third, Hilt held on for the win, despite an escape from Rider’s Brian Polashuck.

Pletcher recorded his seventh-straight victory, posting an 8-1 decision over the Broncs’ Rob Morrison. Owning a 2-0 lead after the first, Pletcher scored an escape in the second and five points on a reversal and a nearfall in the third to take the match for the Scarlet Knights.

In the final bout of the night, D’Amico won a 5-2 decision at heavyweight over Rider’s Peter Reid. After a scoreless opening period, D’Amico scored an escape and a takedown and held a 3-1 lead after a Reid. In the third, Reid escaped from the defensive position, but D’Amico recorded another takedown to win the match.

Rutgers will travel to Washington, D.C., for an EIWA match-up with American University on Sunday, Feb. 4, at 12:00 p.m.
