RU opened the match, winning the first three bouts to surge out to a 9-0 advantage. Sophomore Chris Ressa (Andover, NJ) won his team-leading 26th match of the season, with a 3-2 decision over Drexel’s Matt Brienza at 165. Sophomore Andy Roy (Wall, NJ) put the Scarlet Knights up 6-0 in the team competition with a 6-2 decision of Carl Schmidt at 174. Sophomore Rudy Medini (Colonia, NJ) earned a 7-2 decision over Josh Fisk at 184.
The best match of the evening pitted Rutgers senior Ryan McGrath (Columbia, NJ), ranked 20th in the nation at 197, against Drexel’s Chris Jones, who is ranked as high as 10th in the nation in various polls. Jones captured an 11-3 victory over McGrath, the first of four straight matches the Dragons would take to take a 14-9 lead heading into the final three matches.
Rutgers took two of the final three bouts to even the team score 17-17. Junior Jon Rodriguez (Bound Brook, NJ) earned a 16-5 major decision over Chris Lazartic at 141, while junior Amir Khan (Voorhees, NJ) won by major decision over Brendan Mance, 19-5, at 157.
Rutgers will return to action Wednesday, Feb. 26 when it travels to Bloomsburg, PA to face Bloomsburg at 7:30 p.m.
