  • WEST POINT, NY - After shutting out the United States Merchant Marine Academy 46-0, the Rutgers University wrestling team fell to 7-3 after losing to EIWA opponent Army, 30-3, splitting the Sunday double-header at West Point.

In their first match of the day, the Scarlet Knights blew away USMMA by a 46-0 score. Freshman 165-pounder Matt Pletcher (East Hampton, NJ) earned his first collegiate victory when he pinned Mariner Nate Van de Venter at 4:08. Other notable victories included a 7-0 decision by junior Steve Adamcsik (Chester, NJ) at the 141-pound class, which extended his unbeaten streak to 13 matches.

Also, senior 184-pounder Rudy Medini (Colonia, NJ) earned an easy 5-0 victory while 197-pound freshman Lamar Brown (Red Bank, NJ) pinned USMMA’s Eric Rohan at 4:21.

The Scarlet Knights were unable to continue their hot streak in the afternoon’s second meet. Army built a lead and won all but 9 matches against RU. The lone Rutgers victory came from Adamcsik, who won for the 14th straight match. The Military Academy outworked an RU squad and came away with the easy 30-3 victory.

RU coach John Sacchi was disappointed the team ended up with a split, but hopes that his young team will learn from such a defeat.

“Army basically showed us how it was done today,” Sacchi said. “We have to realize that it just gets tougher from this point on and we have to come away from this match with a better idea of how to get things done.”

With the win and the loss, the Scarlet Knights’ record stands at 7-3, 2-3 EIWA.

The Scarlet Knights will be in action again on Jan. 21 when they host Brown University at 7:00 p.m. at the College Avenue Gymnasium.
