  • COLLEGE PARK, MD – The Rutgers University wrestling team earned its first dual meet win of the season on Saturday when it defeated the Maryland Terrapins, 23-13. The Scarlet Knights won six of 10 decisions during the meet, highlighted by a 10-2 victory by senior captain Rudy Medini (Colonia, NJ) and a pin by freshman heavyweight Mike D'Amico (Kenilworth, NJ).

The match began at 184-pounds and featured Medini, ranked ninth nationally, against Rob Parker of Maryland. Medini’s return to the mat after a season-long injury in 2004-2005 has been quite impressive and his 10-2 win over Parker improved his season record to 3-0.

The Scarlet Knights dropped three of the first five matches on the afternoon, yet recovered to win four of the last five and win the meet running away.

With RU holding just a slim 14-13 advantage heading into the final three matches, a trio of Scarlet Knights wrestlers: sophomore Jamie Lijo (Hopatcong, NJ) and freshmen Robert Kaiser (Lodi, NJ) and Michael Whalen (Lake Hiawatha, NJ) all dropped their opponents.

Junior Steve Adamcsik (Chester, NJ) and Whalen have been almost as impressive as Medini thus far. Adamcsik owns a 2-1 season record after his victory over Steve Fehnel of Maryland, as does Whalen after his 6-2 victory over Maryland’s Dominic Buckman on Saturday.

With the win, the Scarlet Knights improved to 1-2 on the young season and the loss dropped the Terps to just 1-5. The team will be on a break until Wednesday, Dec. 28 when it heads to Wilkes Barre, PA to take part in the Wilkes Open at 10:00 a.m.
