  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Boston University wrestling team entered today’s match vs. Rutgers riding a nine-match winning streak, but the Scarlet Knights captured eight of 10 bouts with the Terriers en route to a 26-9 win at the College Avenue Gymnasium. In the second dual of the day, Sacred Heart won three of the last four matches to upend Rutgers, 20-14. With the split, RU moves to 8-4 overall. RU was without 174-pound starter Andy Roy (Wall, NJ), sidelined with an ankle sprain.

RU trailed, 6-3, after two matches with the Terriers, but received a boost at 174 from Chris Ressa (Andover, NJ), who was wrestling up from his usual weight of 165. Ressa secured an 8-3 decision over Ben Schilens, the first of six-straight wins for the Scarlet Knights. Rudy Medini (Colonia, NJ) contributed a win at 184, knocking off BU’s Ed Strauss, who entered the match with an 18-4 record, to give RU a 9-6 lead. Seniors Ryan McGrath (Blairstown, NJ) and Frank Sabatino (Hazlet, NJ) added back-to-back victories to extend the lead to 15-6. At 125, freshman Shaun Sehar (Harrisburg, PA) outlasted BU’s Mike Galorenzo, 4-2, while at 133, Andrew Tilles (Devon, PA) used a reversal and near fall midway through the first period to build a 5-0 lead en route to a 10-2 major decision over Jason Slutski that clinched the team win. Amir Khan (Voorhees, NJ) started the match with a 5-2 win at 157, knocking off BU’s Rayes Gonzales, who was 18-7 overall entering the contest. Greg Austin (Seaville, NJ) capped the victory with a 12-3 major decision over Justin Blumenthal at 149.

Against Sacred Heart, Rutgers fell behind 3-0, but forged a 3-3 tie when Ressa, back at 165, knocked off Ron Wright, 6-1. Sacred Heart and Rutgers then exchanged major decisions, as Wayne Oakley beat Scott McAdoo (Prince Frederick, MD), 15-3, at 174 and Rudy Medini answered with an 18-4 win over Derek Venne at 184. SH’s Anthony Reynolds, ranked fifth nationally, beat McGrath at 197, 6-2, ending McGrath’s 11-match winning streak and giving Sacred Heart a 10-7 lead. Sabatino answered, however, with a major decision at 285, trouncing Mike Ames, 13-3. A tough, 2-1 overtime loss by Sehar at 125 represented the first of three-straight losses by the Scarlet Knights, affording SH a 20-11 lead before Austin closed the day with a 3-2 win.

Austin (149), Ressa (165, 74), Medini (184) and Sabatino (285) were the double-winners for the Scarlet Knights.

Rutgers returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 9, when it hosts Army at 3:00 p.m. – the final home match for the Scarlet Knights.
