  • BROCKPORT, NY – The Rutgers University wrestling team opened its 2005-2006 season with a sixth-place finish at the SUNY Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Showcase Classic. The Scarlet Knights finished with 85 points in the 11-team tournament, on Saturday, Nov. 12.

Freshman Michael Whalen (Lake Hiawatha, NJ) was impressive in his collegiate debut, finishing second overall in the 174-pound weight class. Whalen defeated Jon Mathias of Army, 4-3 and then went on to drop Eric Chine of Kent State, 4-2. Whalen advanced to the championship match and lost to first-place finisher Aaron Miller of Kent State, 8-4.

Senior Rudy Medini (Colonia, NJ) performed extremely well in his return to the mat after missing the entire 2004-2005 season. Like Whalen, Medini finished second overall in his respective weight class. Medini, the second seed in his bracket, knocked off two nationally ranked grapplers in the 184-pound class: No. 18 Ron Howard of Cleveland State by a major decision at 16-4 and No. 19 Luke Calvert of Army, by way of a 3-2 score. Medini went on to lose the championship match to No. 1 seed Alex Camargo of Kent State, 6-2.

Junior Steve Adamcsik (Chester, NJ) finished fourth overall in the 141-pound weight class, pinning Mark Savino of Brown before going on to lose to Brad Forbes of Bloomsburg, 4-0. Prior to his defeat to Forbes, Adamcsik defeated Drew Lashaway, 10-4, and then dropped Dana Gingerich of Buffalo, 7-3.

Despite being knocked out of the championship bracket by Brandon Benson of Army, Sophomore Jamie Lijo (Hopatcong, NJ) came back strong on the consolation side and finished fifth overall in the 157-pound class. Lijo advanced through the consolation bracket before pinning John Cummings of Buffalo at 3:06.

The Scarlet Knights return to action on Saturday, Nov. 19, when they travel to Annapolis, MD, to take part in the Navy Classic at 9:00 a.m.
