Maryland’s John-Henry Zarzycki got the Terps off to a 3-0 lead with a 5-1 decision over Jon Rodriguez (Bound Brook, NJ). Rutgers bounced back with four straight wins. Greg Austin (Seaville, NJ) started the run with a 8-2 win over Adam James. After Khan’s pin, Chris Ressa (Andover, NJ) and Andy Roy (Wall, NJ) followed with six-point decisions. Roy’s win gave Rutgers a commanding 15-3 lead.
Jake Stork cut the lead to 15-9 with a first peiord pin over Rudy Medini (Colonia, NJ). Maryland’s momentum was short-lived, however, as Rutgers took the next two matches. Ryan McGrath (Columbia, NJ) picked up a decision at 197 and heavyweight Frank Sabatino (Hazlet) won, 3-1, in overtime to extend Rutgers lead to 21-9. Rutgers split the last two matches, resulting in a 24-12 final score.
Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, February, 1, when it hosts Boston University and Sacred Heart for a tri-meet at College Ave. Gymnasium. The matches are scheduled to start at 12:00 pm.
