  • NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – In its first match of the season, the Rutgers wrestling team rallied to a 19-17 victory Indiana, marking Rutgers’ first ever win over a Big Ten foe. Facing a 7-0 deficit, Rutgers won the next four matches in gaining a 16-7 lead. Greg Austin (Seaville, NJ) led the rally with a 14-1 victory at 149 pounds. Amir Khan (Voorhees, NJ) followed that with a first period pin of IU’s Steve Amy, and the Knights never looked back.

Indiana took a 3-0 lead when Greg Schaefer decisioned Andrew Tilles (Devon, PA), 10-9. After a back and forth match, Schaefer scored a take down as time expired to take the match. Coyte Cooper then scored a major decision over Jon Rodriguez (Bound Brook, NJ) to extend Indiana’s lead, 7-0.

After Khan gave Rutgers the lead, Chris Ressa (Andover, NJ) built upon it with a 6-2 win at 165 pounds. Andy Roy (Wall, NJ) capped the run with a 10-5 victory over Brady Richardson at 174 pounds. Roy took a tentative 4-3 lead into the third period, but scored two takedowns in the final two minutes to seal the victory. Rutgers’ run ended when Andrew Rios defeated RU’s Rudy Medini (Colonia, NJ), 10-9, on a late escape.

Senior Ryan McGrath (Columbia, NJ) beat IU’s Pat DeGain to push Rutgers’ lead back to nine. McGrath extended his win streak to five, coming off of his first place finish at the Navy Classic. After Frank Sabatino (Hazlet, NJ) dropped a 9-6 decision to IU’s Ty Matthews, Indiana needed a pin to make up its 19-13 deficit. Indiana’s Joe Dubuque was able to post a 22-10 decision over RU’s Marc Rosenfeld (Brick, NJ), but it was not enough to overcome the team’s deficit.

Rutgers will be back in action on Saturday, December 7, when the travel to the Sheridan Duals, hosted by Lehigh University. The Scarlet Knights will face Lehigh, Lock Haven and Slippery Rock in an exciting day of wrestling action. RU’s next home match will take place on Wednesday, January 22, when it hosts Rider.
