WILKES-BARRE, PA – The Rutgers wrestling team finished competition at the 72nd annual Wilkes Open on Tuesday. The tournament, which was reduced to one day this year, saw five Scarlet Knights place, including a pair of top-three showings.
Red-shirt freshman Joe Sacco (Johnson City, NY) had his best career performance, finishing second in the 165-pound weight class. He won four matches, including a major decision, on the day to advance to the title bout. In the finals, he dropped an 11-2 decision to Oklahoma’s Jarrod King.
Red-shirt freshman Rob Kaiser (Lodi, NJ) won four matches on the day to take fourth-place at 165 pounds, giving the Scarlet Knights two placewinners in the weight class.
Red-shirt freshman Marcello Medini (Colonia, NJ) took third place at 157 pounds. Marcello won his first two bouts of the day to advance to the third round of the championship bracket before getting knocked into wrestlebacks. He rebounded with four victories, including a pair of falls and a 5-2 decision over Lehigh’s Ben Bishop in the third-place bout.
Sophomore Steve Adamcsik (Chester, NJ) took fifth place in the 141-pound weight class. He won a pair of major decisions in the championship bracket to reach the semifinals. He lost a tough 2-0 sudden victory match to Lock Haven’s Clint Shirk in the semifinals of the consolation draw but rebounded to take fifth.
Freshman Mike Whalen (Lake Hiawatha, NJ) rebounded from an early exit in the championship bracket to win four matches in wrestlebacks, including a pair of falls. He advanced to the fifth-place match before his day finally came to an end with a sixth-place finish.
Sophomore 149-pounder Mike Ferrara (Effort, PA) won his first two matches of the day to advance to the third round of the championship draw, then won a third bout in wrestlebacks before ending his day.
Junior 125-pounder Ricky Ringel (South Plainfield, NJ) won a pair of matches including a pin and a technical fall in the championship bracket to reach the third round before being eliminated. He won his third match of the day in wrestlebacks before losing his second match of the tournament.
Freshman John Slevin (Montclair, NJ) won three matches on the day at 285 pounds.
A select group of Scarlet Knights will compete at the Midland Championships in Evanston, IL, on Wednesday and Thursday.
