  • BROCKPORT, NY – The Rutgers wrestling team opened its 2002-2003 season with a strong showing at the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Tournament, held today at SUNY-Brockport. The Scarlet Knights placed fifth with 86 points, while fourth-ranked Oklahoma took top team honors with 183.5 points, finishing ahead of second-place Ohio State (154.5) and Cleveland State (144.0).

Rutgers, after finishing fourth last year, also had six wrestlers place in the top five in their respective weight classes.

The top two finishers for Rutgers were junior Greg Austin (Seaville, NJ) at 149 pounds and Andy Roy (Wall, NJ) at 174, both of whom finished in third place. Austin and Roy posted identical 4-1 records, with Austin beating Ohio State’s Josh Dougherty, 5-1, in the consolation finals. Roy scored a major win in his consolation final, knocking off top-seeded Hunter Guenot of Bloomsburg, 8-2.

At 125, two freshmen – Marc Rosenfeld (Brick, NJ) and Shawn Sehar (Harrisburg, PA) – placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Rosenfeld took fourth with a 6-4 win over Bloomsburg’s Mike Sebally, while Sehar captured fifth with a 13-2 win over Oklahoma’s Brad Knecht.

At 165, sophomore Chris Ressa (Andover, NJ) was fifth, beating Kurt Pryor (Army), 8-3, while John Foscolo (South Plainfield, NJ) was also fifth at 197, beating Pitt-Johnstown’s Ben Kuntz, 5-1.

The Scarlet Knights are back in action next Saturday, November 23, when they compete at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, MD.
