PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 4, 2014) – Eight members of the Rutgers wrestling team were ranked in the Associated Wrestling Press Preseason NCAA Division I Individual Rankings, with redshirt junior Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) leading the way with a No. 5 ranking at 157 pounds.
Other Scarlet Knights to crack the rankings included: redshirt junior Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) with a No. 9 ranking at 285 pounds; redshirt freshman Anthony Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.) with a No. 15 ranking at 141 pounds; junior Andrew Campolattano (Bound Brook, N.J.) with a No. 18 ranking at 197 pounds; sophomore Scott DelVecchio (South Plainfield, N.J.) with a No. 20 ranking at 133 pounds; junior Ken Theobold (Toms River, N.J.) with a No. 23 ranking at 149 pounds; redshirt sophomore Phil Bakuckas (Hammonton, N.J.) with a No. 27 ranking at 174 pounds and junior Hayden Hrymack (Lincroft, N.J.) with a No. 33 ranking at 184 pounds.
Perrotti (22-15) became the first RU All-American since 2002 last season with an eighth-place finish at the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Oklahoma City. Theobold (22-14) and Smith (27-8) both qualified for NCAAs last season, with Smith making his second consecutive appearance.
DelVecchio (20-7), who earned significant time in the RU lineup last season at 125 pounds, finished as the 133-pound champion at the National Collegiate Open in Glen Allen, Va. Ashnault (15-3), his former teammate at South Plainfield, was crowned the 141-pound champ at the National Collegiate Open in his redshirt season, which he used as a springboard to a successful summer.
In May, Ashnault became the 65 KG Asics University Freestyle National Champion and eventually earned a spot on the USA University World Team. He traveled with the national squad to Hungary, where he became the first Rutgers wrestling representative on the USA University World Team.
Bakuckas (16-11) and Hrymack (14-16) look to build off their initial seasons as consistent starters last year. Campolattano transferred to the Scarlet Knights in the offseason and begins his first year with the Rutgers wrestling program.
