PISCATAWAY, N.J. (June 21, 2014) – Rutgers wrestling redshirt freshman 141-pounder Anthony Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.) is officially a member of the USA University World Team.
Ashnault, who swept 2012 All-American Michael Mangrum (Oregon State) in a two-of-three final to become the 65 KG 2014 Asics University Freestyle National Champion on May 25, was set to wrestle two-time NCAA Champion Jordan Oliver (Oklahoma State) for the USA World Team 65 KG spot Sunday afternoon in Tempe, Arizona.
However, Oliver was unable to make weight for the wrestle-off, giving the 65 KG opening to Ashnault. The selection makes the South Plainfield HS product the first RU grappler to earn a spot on the USA World Team.
“This is a big step in the career of Anthony Ashnault,” said head coach Scott Goodale. “He wrestled a great university national tournament and deserves to be on this team. We told him when we recruited him that he would have an opportunity to win at the world level and now he does.”
Ashnault will compete from July 6-12 in Hungary for the USA World Team at the 2014 University World Championships.
