PISCATAWAY, N.J. (May 7, 2014) – For the second consecutive year, redshirt sophomore heavyweight Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) was named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s Individual All-Academic Team, the NWCA announced Wednesday. Smith, who made the team as a redshirt freshman in 2013, was one of 87 division I grapplers to receive the honor.
Smith wrapped up his redshirt sophomore campaign at 27-8 overall and 13-2 in duals, going 2-2 at the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Oklahoma City from March 20-22. He qualified for the national tournament for the second-straight season after finishing as runner-up in the 2014 EIWA Championships in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from March 8-9.
In order to receive NWCA All-Academic honors, Smith had to achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher and win 60 percent of his total schedule, and/or qualify for the 2014 NCAA Championships.
