OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (March 24, 2014) – Redshirt sophomore 157-pounder Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) achieved All-America status Saturday to become the first Scarlet Knight to reach the NCAA Championships podium since 2002.

As a team RU finished the tournament 34th with 11.5 team points.

    FINAL TEAM RESULTS-BRACKETS

To add to the historic weekend for the program, former Scarlet Knight grappler and president of the Scarlet Knights Wrestling Club, Joshua Gross, presented the NCAA All-American Awards to the 184-pounders during the championship finals.

Gross earned a his B.A. from Rutgers University and founded Mill Creek Capital Advisors, LLC (Conshohocken, PA). He currently serves as President of the Scarlet Knights Wrestling Club & Foundation, which supports The Rutgers University wrestling team.

Perrotti finished in eighth place and is the first All-American under head coach Scott Goodale and the 9th in Rutgers history. He achieved the 10th All-American status in school history with the win, as 142-pounder Anthony Surage (1980, 83) was a two-time All-American – the only grappler in RU history to achieve that feat.

Rutgers had three other wrestlers qualify for the 2014 Championships – 133-pounder redshirt senior Vinnie Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.), redshirt sophomore heavyweight  Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) and sophomore 149-pounder Ken Theobold (Toms River, N.J.). Dellefave and Theobold dropped their first two matches of the tournament, while Smith posted a 2-2 mark.

    Championships Notes

    • Perrotti was one of just three wrestlers in this year’s NCAA Championships to lose his first match and bounce back to become an All-American. Lehigh’s 125-pounder Darian Cruz dropped his opening-round match by tech fall to eventual third-place finisher Nico Megaludis (Penn State), but ended up in seventh. Cal-State Bakersfield’s Bryce Hammond also lost his opening match but ended his tournament in eighth place at 174 pounds.
    • Perrotti’s 10-second pin against No. 8 Roger Pena (Oregon State) was the second fastest in NCAA Wrestling Championships history by collegiate rules. Clarence Richardson (LSU) holds the record, as he pinned Scot Mansur (Portland State) in nine seconds at 177 pounds in 1983.
    • Perrotti entered the weekend with a 1-5 record against ranked opponents in 2013-14. After losing to No. 11/14/13 (AWN/InterMat/W.I.N.) Blaise Butler (Virginia) by a 7-6 margin to start the tournament, Perrotti defeated three ranked foes in a row including No. 9/9/9 Roger Pena (Oregon State), No. 14/NR/17 Zach Brunson (Illinois) and No. 8/8/7 Nestor Taffur (Boston University) to secure All-America status.
    • As a team the Scarlet Knights finished 34th with 11.5 points. It was the second-highest finish in Goodale’s tenure, as the team finished 32nd in 2010-11 and in 2009-10. However, RU’s 11.5 points came with just four wrestlers in the field. The squad had seven NCAA qualifiers in 2009-10 and a school record eight in 2010-11.
