OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – (March 20, 2014) – After the first day of the 2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships, two Scarlet Knight grapplers are alive in their consolation brackets and will continue their quests Friday at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Redshirt sophomores Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) and Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) split their first two matches of the tournament at heavyweight and 157 pounds ,respectively, to move on to Session III. Sophomore 149-pounder Ken Theobold (Toms River, N.J.) and 133-pounder Vinnie Dellevfave (Toms River, N.J.) were eliminated from contention after the first day.

Session III begins tomorrow at noon EST with the championship quarterfinals on the inside four mats and the second and third consolation rounds on the outside four mats. With three wins tomorrow, Smith and Perrotti will earn advance to the consolation quarterfinals and earn All-American status.

    Session II

Perrotti was the final Rutgers wrestler to compete on Day One, coming from behind in the third period to pull out a 13-8 win against Brandon Zeerip (Eastern Michigan). Perrotti entered the final stanza down, 8-6, immediately registering an escape to cut the deficit to 8-7. He went ahead for good at the 40-second mark, finishing a takedown before two back points for an 11-8 lead.

Two more near fall points as time expired sealed the 13-8 decision and set Perrotti up with No. 8 Roger Pena (Oregon State) tomorrow in the consolation second round.

Smith drew the No. 2 seed Nick Gwiazdowski (NC State) in his second bout, losing 6-3. Smith trailed by just a point, 4-3, entering the final period before a Gwiazdowski escape and Smith stall in the third iced the match. Smith will continue his run in the consolation bracket tomorrow against Bucknell’s Joe Stolfi.

The matchup is a rematch of the 2014 EIWA Heavyweight Championship, where Stolfi topped Smith in a hard-fought match, 9-7 (March 9).

Robert Jillard (Northern Illinois) ended Theobold’s tournament with a 9-2 win in the consolation first round. Theobold responded down 8-0 with a reversal to start the third period, but Jillard’s lead was two steep, resulting in the Theobold loss

Dellefave had his NCAA Championships run ended in the pigtail consolation round, where Devon Lotito (Cal Poly) jumped on the Toms River East HS product early en route to a 6-1 win. Lotito scored a takedown in the first minute and registered two back points to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Dellefave escaped shortly after, but Lotito kept the pressure on the rest of the way, giving Dellefave the loss and ending his tournament.

    Session I

Smith defeated No. 15 Adam Fager (Utah Valley) by a 6-2 decision to advance to the championship second round. Smith recorded the first takedown of the match at the 1:16 mark of the opening period, went over a minute of riding time in the second and never looked back. A takedown with 15 second to go sealed the 6-2 win with 1:59 of riding time.

Dellefave dropped a 9-1 major decision in his first match of the tournament, falling to No. 1 Joe Colon (Northern Iowa) for the second time this season. Colon scored a takedown at the 1:22 mark of the first period and never let up, accumulating 3:03 of riding time en route to the win.

Theobold was edged, 9-4, in his opening bout against No. 10 Zach Neibert (Virginia Tech). A reversal by Theobold to end the first period kept the match tight, cutting Neibert’s lead to 4-3. But a Neibert reversal and two back points to open the second period put Theobold in a hole he could not recover from, as a mid-period escape was all Neibert allowed the rest of the way.

Perrotti suffered a tough defeat in his first round matchup, losing a highly competitive 7-6 match against No. 10 Blaise Butler (Virginia). Perrotti started the scoring with a takedown two minutes in and held a 2-1 lead after the first period.

After starting down to begin the second period, Butler quickly escaped and took down Perrotti for a 4-2 edge. Perroti immediately responded with a reversal to tie things at 4-4.

With the match tied a 5-5 following a Perrotti escape in the third period, Butler scored the match-winning takedown with 54 seconds remaining. Perrotti escaped with 17 seconds left, but Butler held off Perrotti’s attacks to win, 7-6.
