Rutgers Wrestling Travels to Philadelphia for 2014 EIWA Championships
Ten Scarlet Knights will fight for 47 NCAA Championship Allocations

  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. – (March 6, 2014) – The Rutgers wrestling team heads to Philadelphia to compete in the 2014 EIWA Championships, hosted by Penn, from March 8-9 at the Palestra. The two-day tournament will be the largest EIWA Championships ever held, as 18 programs will have their grapplers fight for 47 NCAA allocations.

    Saturday, March 8

    Session I: 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

    (Championship First Round, Championship Second Round, Consolation First Round, Championship Quarterfinals,

    Sunday, March 9

    Session II: 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

    The Scarlet Knights reached 11 dual victories for the eighth consecutive year, finishing the 2014 campaign with their fifth straight win over Drexel dating back to 2010.

    Rutgers enters the dual with one ranked grappler in No. 16/13/17 (The Open Mat/InterMat/W.I.N.) redshirt sophomore heavyweight Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.). Smith enters the weekend on a 10-match winning streak and boasts his highest ranking of the season.

    RU had four wrestlers ranked in the second RPI of the season, released on Feb. 27. Redshirt senior 133-pounder Vinnie Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.) ranked No. 32 at 133 pounds, freshman Tyson Dippery (Harrisburg, Pa.) ranked No. 25 among 141 pounders, redshirt sophomore Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) was ranked No. 32 at 157 pounds and Smith pulled in the highest ranking at No. 10 among heavyweights.

    Rutgers enters the EIWA Championships with five wrestlers who placed last season in the tournament. Dellefave pulled in the highest ranking, finishing third at 133 pounds, while redshirt junior 165-pounder Nick Visicaro (Long Branch, N.J.) finished fifth, Smith finished sixth, sophomore 149-pounder Ken Theobold (Toms River, N.J.) finished sixth and redshirt senior 184-pounder Dan Seidenberg (Red Bank, N.J.) who wrestled at 197 pounds last season, finished seventh.
