  • ITHACA, N.Y. – (Jan. 26, 2014) – The Rutgers wrestling team trailed by just three points after two bouts, but wins by No. 3 Cornell in six of the next eight matches put the match out of reach, as the Scarlet Knights fell, 29-9, Sunday afternoon at Newman Arena.

Redshirt senior 133-pounder Vinnie Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.), sophomore 149-pounder Ken Theobold (Toms River, N.J.) and redshirt sophomore heavyweight Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) each won by decision at their respective weights for RU.

Dellefave earned a 2-1 win in sudden victory against Cornell’s No. NR/12/12 Mark Grey, as an illegal move gave him the one point edge 39 seconds into the extra period. With the win, RU trailed, 6-3, after No. 1/1/2 Nahshon Garrett picked up a pin in the opening bout at 125 pounds.

The win was Dellefave’s first over a ranked opponent this season and bumped his record 9-6 overall and 7-4 in dual action. He also evened his record at 1-1 in sudden victory matches in 2013-14.

Two bouts later at 149 pounds, Theobold earned a 3-1 decision over Cornell’s Conner David. Theobold scored a takedown 47 seconds into the opening period, adding an escape to start the second before holding on for the win. With the victory, Theobold improved to 16-10 overall and 7-5 in duals. He tied his win total from last season, when he went 16-13.

Smith closed the match with a win at heavyweight, outlasting Jacob Aiken-Phillips, 3-2, after tiebreakers. The two entered sudden victory tied, 1-1, but neither was able to score in the one minute period. In the first tiebreaker period, Aiken-Phillips chose down and escaped late to go ahead, 2-1.

Smith escaped 10 seconds into the next period, earning the winning point following the escape due to locked hands by Aiken-Phillips. With the win Smith improved to 19-5 overall and 10-2 in duals. He is the first RU wrestler to reach the 10-win mark in duals this season, while his 19 overall victories are second. He has won his last seven bouts.

The Scarlet Knights close their tough road stretch on Saturday, Feb. 8 at No. 20 Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa.
