Scarlet Knights seek first win over ranked foe this season

    PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Jan. 24, 2014) – The Rutgers wrestling team continues its difficult road stretch at No. 3/6 (USA Today Division I Coaches/ InterMat) Cornell on Sunday, Jan. 26 beginning at 2 p.m. The dual is the second of three consecutive road matches for the Scarlet Knights, all of which come against ranked foes.

    A live video stream of the match will be available via the Ivy League Digital Network. ESPN Ithaca will be on hand to provide radio play-by-play of the match, as well.

    The Scarlet Knights enter the dual with one ranked grappler in No. NR/16/18 (AWN/InterMat/W.I.N.) redshirt sophomore heavyweight, Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.). Smith enters the weekend on a six-match winning streak.

    Cornell enters the match with eight of its 10 starters ranked: No. 1/1/2 (AWN/InterMat/W.I.N.) 125-pounder Nashon Garrett, No. NR/12/12 133-pounder Mark Grey, No. 7/7/11 141-pounder Mike Nevinger, No. 4/6/8 149-pounder Chris Villalonga, No. 7/9/8 157-pounder Brian Realbuto, No. 12/13/17 165-pounder Chris Palacio, No. 2/3/3 184-pounder Gabe Dean and No. 18/NR/NR 197-pounder Jace Bennett.


    Last Time Out

    RU fell to No. 17/17 Iowa State last Friday in Ames, Iowa. The teams were tied, 13-13, after seven bouts, but RU dropped the final three by decision to secure the Cyclones victory at Hilton Coliseum.


    Scouting the Big Red

    Cornell enters the weekend after taking down Ivy League foe Harvard, 33-6, on Jan. 18 at the Friedman Wrestling Center. Despite Nahshon Garrett, Mark Grey, Chris Villalonga and Brian Realbuto all sitting, the Big Red still won eight of 10 bouts, including a tech fall at 184 pounds from Gabe Dean, a major decision at 149 pounds from Conner David and a pin at 165 pounds from Dylan Palacio.

    Cornell is a perfect 5-0 in duals this season and has placed fourth or better in all three team tournaments it has entered: The New York State Intercollegiate Championships (First, 207 points), the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational (Fourth, 115.5 points) and the Southern Scuffle (Fourth, 114.5 points).

    Cornell is 64-12-1 (.838) in dual meet competition in the last six seasons and has won 29 straight duals against EIWA competitors dating back to 2010-11. Further, Cornell is 68-3-1 in dual meet action against EIWA teams dating back to 2004-05, including 64-0 against teams other than Lehigh.

    Overall, Cornell has five returning NCAA qualifiers from last season: Garrett, Nevinger, Villalonga, Bennett and Lane. Garrett and Nevinger achieved All-America status, as Garrett placed third at 125 pounds and Nevinger placed fifth at 141 pounds.

    RU defeated Cornell, 18-16, in the last meeting between the two schools. The Scarlet Knights trailed, 16-15, heading into the heayweight bout, before Tom Petko scored a 5-2 decision to seal an 18-16 victory on Jan. 31, 1998.
