Two Reach Podium at “Shorty” Hitchcock Memorial Classic
DelVecchio, Pafumi take third place at 133, 174 pounds, respectively

    MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – (Jan. 20, 2014) –Two Scarlet Knights reached the podium at the 11th annual “Shorty” Hitchcock Memorial Tournament on Sunday, Jan. 19, as freshman 133-pounder Scott DelVecchio (South Plainfield, N.J.) and redshirt freshman 174-pounder Anthony Pafumi (West Orange, N.J.) took third place in their respective weight classes.

    DelVecchio, who went 5-1 overall at the Student Memorial Center, began the tournament by winning his first three bouts. He defeated Millersvile’s Chase Brown by a 20-5 tech fall in his opening bout and followed that up with a 19-7 major decision against Navy’s Jericho Uremenita.

    DelVecchio went 3-0 after falling into wrestle backs. He handled his last two opponents, winning by a 16-7 major decision against Jhared Simmons (Montgomery College) and topping Matthew Bryer (Lock Haven) by a 7-3 decision in the third place bout.  

    Pafumi, who posted a 7-1 tournament, dropped into wrestle backs after losing his second bout of the tourney, 3-1, to Brown’s Galloway Thurston. The St. Peter’s Prep (N.J.) product responded by winning his next six bouts, advancing by medical forfeit in his final two matches to take third place.

    Pafumi increased his 2013-14 record to 18-6 overall, while DelVecchio moved to 17-7.

    For both DelVecchio and Pafumi, it was their second time placing at an invitational this season. DelVecchio went 7-1 at the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open on Nov. 10 to take third place, while Pafumi posted a 6-1 record at the Wilkes University Open to finish third, as well.

    The Rutgers wrestling team is in action next against No. 5/6 (USA Today-NWCA-AWN Division I Coaches Poll/InterMat) Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y on Jan. 26. The dual is the second consecutive matchup against a ranked opponent, as RU will close its road stretch the following weekend at No. 21/27 Lehigh on Feb. 8.
