PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Jan. 15, 2014) – The Rutgers wrestling team begins a tough road stretch on Friday, Jan. 17 in Ames, Iowa, where the Scarlet Knights will face No. 17/17 (NWCA USA Today Coaches Poll/InterMat) Iowa State. The match, which will begin at 8 p.m. EST,  is RU’s first road dual in over a month, as ISU marks the second ranked opponent of the season.

All the action will be streamed live on Cyclones TV, via Cyclones.com. A subscription is required.

Rutgers follows the Iowa State match with road duals against No. 5/6 Cornell (Jan. 26) and No. 21/27 Lehigh (Feb. 8).

“All three programs are top notch year in and year out,” said head coach Scott Goodale. “It’s a huge challenge, but a great opportunity to see where we’re at.”

The Scarlet Knights enter the dual with one ranked grappler in No. NR/17/18 (AWN/InterMat/W.I.N.) redshirt sophomore heavyweight, Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.). Smith enters the weekend on a five-match winning streak.

Iowa State enters the match with five ranked wrestlers: No. 16/10/15 Michael Moreno (165 pounds), No. 16/NR/NR Earl Hall (125 pounds), No. 13/12/NR Tanner Weatherman (174 pounds), No. NR/NR/8 Leland Weatherspoon (174 pounds) and No. 2/2/2 Kyven Gadson (197 pounds).

    Last Time Out

RU dismantled EIWA foe American, 31-6, in its last match, as the team recorded three tech falls and a major decision to cruise to victory (Jan. 10). The win bumped the Scarlet Knights’ EIWA dual record to 6-0 this season in their highest point total to date.

    Scouting the Cyclones

Iowa State welcomes the Scarlet Knights to Ames, Iowa after dropping a 27-11 dual to No. 4/4 Oklahoma on Jan. 12 at Hilton Coliseum.

The Sooners won the first five bouts of the dual before Mike Moreno earned a 13-0 major decision at 165 pounds. After losing the next two bouts, No. 2/2/2 Kyven Gadson defeated Oklahoma’s No. 3/3/4 Travis Rutt, 3-1, in sudden victory one. Gadson is 22-0 in dual matches the last two seasons.

Despite the match already being lost, heavyweight Quean Smith pulled an upset to close the dual, defeating Oklahoma’s No. 15/18/14 Ross Larson, 13-2.

Prior to the Oklahoma loss, the Cyclones wrapped up the 2014 Southern Scuffle in eighth place with 71.5 points.

RU and ISU squared off last season, with the Cyclones coming away victorious, 19-15. The Scarlet Knights are 0-1 against ranked opponents this season, falling, 22-9, to then-No. 11 Virginia at the Asics/Journeymen Northeast Duals on Nov. 30.
