  • MATCH NOTES

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Jan. 9, 2014) – The Rutgers wrestling team wraps up its three-match home stretch on Friday, Jan. 10 at 6:30 p.m., welcoming EIWA opponent American University to the College Ave. Gym. The match will be broadcast live on RVision, presented by AT&T, with Danny Breslauer on play-by-play and former RU grappler Sean DeDeyn on color.

A total of three ranked wrestlers will compete in Friday’s match, including RU’s redshirt sophomore heavyweight Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.). Smith is ranked No. NR/18/19 (AWN/InterMat/WI.N.), while American University wrestlers No. 8/12/7 David Terao (125 pounds) and No. 6/9/10 Dan Mitchell (197 pounds) are the two nationally recognized Eagles.

Two Scarlet Knights enter the weekend with winning streaks of at least four bouts. Smith has won his last four matchups, while redshirt freshman 125-pounder Sean McCabe (Connetquot, N.Y.) has won six straight.

    Last Time Out

RU edged EIWA foe Harvard in its last match (Jan. 5), as Smith outlasted Nicholas Gadzjik in the first round of tiebreakers, 3-2, to seal a 24-15 Scarlet Knights win. Back-to-back pins by freshman Tyson Dippery (Harrisburg, Pa.) and sophomore Ken Theobold (Toms River, N.J.) at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively, gave Rutgers enough cushion to hold off the Crimson late.

    Scouting the Eagles

American enters the match after last competing at the Franklin & Marshall Open on Jan. 4 and the Southern Scuffle from Jan. 1-2. Five Eagles placed at the Franklin & Marshall Open, including four projected starters in 174-pounder Keithen Cast, 157-pounder John Boyle, 133-pounder Esteban Gomez-Rivera and 149-pounder Cole Moseley.

Cast finished as the runner-up at 174 pounds, Boyle placed fourth at 157 pounds, Rivera finished fifth at 133 pounds and Mosely ended his tournament in third place at 149 pounds.

At the Southern Scuffle, American placed 23rd out of 34 teams. David Terao paced the Eagles with a fourth place finish, reaching the Scuffle podium for the second consecutive year.

Heavyweight Blake Herrin, who was ranked earlier this season, came one win shy of reaching the podium, going 3-2 overall at the tournament.

American last competed in a dual match on Dec. 19 against George Mason, beating the Patriots, 26-10. American won seven of 10 bouts to capture the win, its only this dual season. The Eagles' match against Rutgers represents the first EIWA dual of the season.
