Wrestling Welcomes Columbia, Harvard to College Ave Gym
Scarlet Knights begin three-match EIWA homestand with Columbia on Jan. 3

    PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Jan. 1, 2014) – The Rutgers wrestling team begins a three-match homestand against Columbia at 7 p.m. on Jan. 3, followed by a dual with Harvard at 1 p.m. on Jan. 5. Both EIWA matches will be held at the College Ave Gym and be broadcast live on RVision, presented by AT&T.

    RU also has a pair of promotions set for the upcoming matches. The program will welcome back its alumni for “Alumni Night” against Columbia on Jan. 3 and will hold its second “Youth Recreation Night” of the season against Harvard on Jan. 5.

    All RU wrestling alumni that attend will receive a foam finger and t-shirt, while the first 500 fans to arrive at the College Ave Gym will receive a foam finger. For “Youth Recreation Day” RU will hold a pre-match clinic for club teams interested, which will begin at approximately 11 a.m. Harvard assistant coach J.P. O’Connor, a three-time All-American and 2010 NCAA Champion at 157 pounds, will assist with the clinic. 

    The squad will also hold a post-match poster autograph session for all. The first 100 kids in attendance will receive a complimentary Rutgers water bottle.

    If interested in bringing your youth club out to the match to participate in the pre-match clinic, please contact the RU Ticket Office. The ticket rate for groups of 15 or more is $5 a ticket, as all ticket purchases must be done through the RU Ticket Office in order to ensure a spot at the clinics.     Last Time Out

    The Scarlet Knights have note competed in dual match since defeating in-state foe Princeton, 27-9, on Dec. 14 at Jadwin Gym. RU got off to at least a 6-2 start in each of the past four seasons, as head coach Scott Goodale led the squad to 7-1 starts in 2012-13, 2011-12 and 2010-11.

    Part of the team wrestled at the 81st Annual Wilkes University Open on Dec. 28. Freshman Taylor Jackson (Lady Lake, Fla.) took home the title at 174 pounds, while sophomore 149-pounder Ken Theobold (Toms River, N.J.) and redshirt junior 165-pound Nick Visicaro (Long Branch, N.J.) each took second in their respective weight classes. Taking third was redshirt freshman 125-pounder Sean McCabe (Connetquot, N.J.) and redshirt freshman 165-pounder Anthony Pafumi (West Orange, N.J., who wrestled up at 174 pounds.


    Scouting the Lions

    Columbia enters the dual after wrapping up the 51st Annual Midlands Championships. A pair of Lions - junior 174-pounder Shane Hughes and senior 165-pounder Josh Houldsworth - placed in the tournament, finishing second and sixth, respectively. As a team, Columbia wrapped up the tournament in 12th place.

    The Lions last competed in a dual on Nov. 30 at the 11th Annual Asics/Journeyman Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y. Columbia topped Michigan State, 16-15, to finish 1-2 at the invitational.

    141-pounder Matt Bystol is the only ranked grappler entering the matchup, coming in at No. 13 by AWN.


    Scouting the Crimson

    Harvard also competed at the Midlands Championships, with sophomore 165-pounder Devon Gobbo pacing the squad. Gobbo reached the round of 12 but was defeated, 4-3, by Houldswoth of Columbia to come one win shy of the podium.

    The Crimson’s match against RU represents will represent their second dual of the season, as Harvard will wrestle at Rider on Saturday, Jan. 4. The squad does not enter with any ranked wrestlers.
