Rutgers Wrestling Competes in Northeast Duals, “Grapple at the Garden”
Scarlet Knights will wrestle four duals in two days

    PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Nov. 27, 2013) – The Rutgers wrestling team (3-0) prepares for its biggest test of the season this weekend, when it competes in four duals in two days at the 11th Annual Asics/ Journeyman Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y. and the Second Annual “Grapple at the Garden,” in New York, N.Y.

    The Scarlet Knights will face No. 11Virginia (USA Today/ NWCA/ AWN Coaches) and Michigan State at the Northeast Duals (Saturday, Nov. 30), and take on future Big Ten foe Maryland and George Mason in the second annual “Grapple at the Garden” (Sunday, Dec. 1).

    Head coach Scott Goodale and Co. enter the weekend undefeated after dropping Clarion, 30-12. RU took eight of 10 bouts, earning three major decisions and a pin in its highest scoring output of the season. RU also improved to 3-0 to start the season for the third time in four years.

    RU competed in both the Northeast Duals and “Grapple” last season, posting a combined 4-1 mark. The Scarlet Knights defeated Columbia (30-6), Binghamton (30-9) and Army (26-15) last season at the Northeast Duals (Nov. 24, 2012), while losing to Nebraska (10-22) and defeating Tennessee-Chattanooga (28-12) in the inaugural “Grapple at the Garden” (Dec. 16, 2012).


    Scouting the Competition

    Virginia (6-1) enters the weekend after winning two-straight, with its most recent victory coming against No. 12 Virginia Tech, 19-13, on Sunday Nov. 24. The Cavaliers are undefeated (4-0) at home this season and boast nine ranked grapplers. No. 24 Wisconsin is the only team to defeat Virginia this season, having done so by a 19-17 margin on Nov. 10.

    Michigan State (4-1) rides a four-match winning streak into the weekend, outscoring Eastern Michigan (Nov. 21) and Drexel (Nov. 16) a combined 49-18 in its last two bouts. The Spartans only loss this season came at the hands of No. 18 Oregon State, 29-9, in the team’s season-opener on Nov. 9. Michigan State has four ranked grapplers on its roster entering the weekend.

    Maryland (3-2), which began the season No. 25 in the USA Today/NWCA/AWN Coaches Poll, looks to avenge back-to-back losses to No. 18 Stanford and Penn (RV) in its last two duals. The Terrapins fell, 17-16, to Stanford on Nov. 16 before dropping 19-13 match at home against Penn on Nov. 22. The Terps boast five ranked wrestlers entering this weekend’s competition.

    George Mason (3-1) will compete at the Northeast Duals before heading to New York, N.Y., on Sunday, wrestling in five duals in two days. The Patriots defeated Davidson, 28-16, in their last bout (Nov. 24).

    Maryland - Rutgers leads, 6-4-1. Under Goodale: 0-1-0

    George Mason - Rutgers leads, 7-3-1. Under Goodale: 1-0.
