  • NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (Nov. 21, 2013) – Four wrestlers have signed their National Letters of Intent to join the Rutgers wrestling team in 2014, the program announced Thursday. Wesley Bernard (Indianapolis, Ind.), Vincent Corsaro (Indianapolis, Ind.), Anthony Giraldo (Guttenberg, N.J.) and Ralph Normandia (Somerset, N.J.) will join RU next season, which represents the squad’s inaugural season wrestling in the Big Ten Conference.

“We are very excited to have these four young men join the Scarlet Knight wrestling program,” said assistant coach John Leonardis. “We know that each of our signees share the same vision of where Rutgers Wrestling is heading and believe that we have four men of strong character that will represent us well on and off the mat.

“All of these guys have competed on the national level in many different events. These men are anxious to compete for NCAA titles while representing Rutgers University. This class addressed weight class needs for our program and at the same time kept some of New Jersey’s best guys home.”

    Wesley Bernard

Bernard, currently ranked the No. 9 high school 285-pounder by InterMat, gives the Scarlet Knights depth at the heavyweight position behind redshirt sophomore Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) and redshirt freshman Lex Knapp (Lacey Township, N.J.). Bernard owns a 128-14 record entering his senior season at Indianapolis Cathedral HS, placing third last season at the IHSAA State Championships and seventh as a sophomore. Bernard also placed third at the 2013 FloNationals Tournament at 285 pounds.

Leonardis on Bernard: “Wesley is an agile wrestler who will benefit from wrestling at this level.  We look forward to having him our room daily, as we know he is willing to put in an effort to compete at the Division I level.”

    Vincent Corsaro

Corsaro, Bernard’s teammate at Indianapolis Cathedral HS, will also join the Scarlet Knights next season. Corsaro finished as the state runner up in each of the last two seasons, going 35-4 in 2011-12 at 145 pounds and 46-4 in 2012-13 at 152 pounds. Corsaro finished with at the 2013 FloNationals tournament at 152 pounds.

Leonardis on Corsaro: “An Indiana state place-winner, an honor student and an All-American at the Junior Nationals in Fargo N.D., Vinny is a well rounded young man who will add in many ways to our roster.  He will compete for the 157-pound spot.”

    Anthony Giraldo

Giraldo is one of two New Jersey products who have signed on to join RU next season. A North Bergen HS product, Giraldo is a three-time NJSIAA State place-winner, finishing as the NJSIAA State champion at 126 pounds last season. Giraldo also took third at the NHSCA Junior Nationals and won the FILA Cadet Nationals.

Leonardis on Giraldo: “Anthony is a three-time N.J. state place winner, honors student and a USA World Team member.  He embodies all that we are looking for in our recruits and we are extremely pleased to add him to our roster. He is a year round wrestler who continues to work to hone his craft. He is a student of the sport and works tirelessly to improve. He will compete for the 133 lbs spot which will be vacated at the conclusion of this season.”

    Ralph Normandia

Normadnia is the second “Garden State” recruit joining the Scarlet Knights for the 2014 season. The Franklin HS product is 49-14 entering his senior season, wrestling at both 195 and 220 pounds in his high school career. Normandia advanced to the 2013 NJSIAA Wrestling Tournament Semifinal last year at 220 pounds as a junior and went undefeated in last summer’s Junior Duals.

    Leonardis on Normandia:

“Ralph is a high character kid who will benefit our program on and off the mat.  We are excited to have Ralph join our program as he will add much depth to the upper weights.  He will compete at 184 or 197 pounds for the Scarlet Knights.”
