PISCATAWAY, N.J. (July 10, 2012) – The Rutgers wrestling team released its schedule for the 2013-14 season on Wednesday, unveiling a home slate that features six dual meets. The Scarlet Knights will compete in 13 dual meets overall, a schedule that includes four opponents which finished 2013 in the final USA TODAY NWCA AWN and Intermat Rankings.
Led by head coach Scott Goodale, who enters his seventh season at the helm of the Scarlet Knights, RU finished the 2012-13 regular season 16-4, 6-1 and placed fifth in the EIWA Tournament.
This season marks RU’s final year in the EIWA Conference, a run that has spanned 65 years (1949-2013).
“I like our schedule,” Goodale said. “It’s the last time we’re in the EIWA so I tried to wrestle as many EIWA teams as possible. We picked up Cornell and I’m excited about that, and we also got a little Big Ten in there with Michigan State and Maryland.
“The schedule is always going to be solid just for the fact of the RPI rankings and putting our kids in the best possible spot to make the national tournament. I’m not real worried about the win-loss record, I’m worried about the progression of our guys, them peaking at the right time and being good in March, and that’s what the schedule is designed for. I think it’s a good setup with a nice mix of nationally ranked teams.”
Rutgers competes along with 11 schools at the Second Annual “Grapple at the Garden” duals on Dec. 1 at Madison Square Garden. RU took part in the first ever “Grapple at the Garden” last season, and will square off with Maryland and George Mason in the 2013 installment of the event.
The Scarlet Knights kick off the 2013 season in Hempstead, N.Y., where they will battle Hofstra in dual meet action. RU last grappled against the Pride on Jan. 27, 2012, a match it lost, 26-10, at the College Avenue Gym.
RU travels to Binghamton, N.Y., the following week to take part in the Binghamton Open (Nov. 10), before taking on Clarion (Nov. 22) on the road. Goodale will lead his squad to the Northeast Duals – which includes a battle against Michigan State –on Nov. 30, following the team’s second consecutive trip to the “Grapple at the Garden.”
The squad closes its regular season tournament schedule by traveling across the country to compete in the Las Vegas Invite from Dec. 6-7. It will be RU’s first time partaking in the invite.
The Scarlet Knights close their regular season with 10 dual meets, a stretch that begins with three-straight EIWA home matches against Princeton (Dec. 15), Brown/Columbia (Jan. 3), and Harvard (Jan. 5). During that slate RU hits the road to battle Iowa State (Jan. 17), which finished last season ranked No. 11/ 20 (Intermant/ USA TODAY NWCA AWN).
The team hosts Big 12 foe West Virginia on Jan. 24 before battling a pair of powerhouse EIWA programs in Cornell (Jan. 26) and Lehigh (Feb. 8). Cornell, seven-time defending EIWA Champions, finished last season ranked the No. 5/ T9 team in the nation, while Lehigh ended 2013 ranked No. 25/ RV.
RU’s hits the mats in front of the Scarlet faithful for its final dual of the season on Feb. 21 against Drexel.
The Scarlet Knights begin their postseason by wrestling in their final EIWA Tournament, hosted by UPenn, from March 8-9 in Philadelphia, Pa. Goodale’s mat squad will have a shot to take on the rest of the country from March 20-22 in Oklahoma City, Ok., where RU will vie for a national championship.
