DES MOINES, IOWA (March 22, 2013) – The Rutgers wrestling team concluded competition at the 2013 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Wells Fargo Arena, Friday. Three Scarlet Knights advanced to the third round of consolations in their respective weight classes before falling. Senior Trevor Melde (Hewitt, N.J.) earned his 100th career victory in the second round of the 141-pound consolation bracket.

Led by sixth-year head coach Scott Goodale, Rutgers finished the tournament with 7.5 team points. The final team standing is yet to be determined.

Melde, senior Scott Winston (Jackson, N.J.) and classmate Dan Rinaldi (Lodi, N.J.) each concluded their respective runs at the NCAA Championships in Session III, going 1-1 on the day.

A three-time NCAA qualifier at 141 pounds, Melde started by picking up his 100th career victory in dramatic fashion, pinning Frank Cimato in just 1:29 to advance to consolation round three. In the next round, he dropped a 4-2 decision to Zach Neibert of Virginia Tech. The senior finished his career with a 100-50 record, becoming the 14th Scarlet Knight grappler to reach the century mark.

Winston’s first match of the day in the second round of wrestlebacks consisted of two takedowns as he cruised to a 4-1 decision over 157-pounder Matt Lester of Oklahoma. He conceded an 8-1 contest to No. 10 Roger Pena (Oregon State) in his last bout in the third round of consolations. He ended his Rutgers career with a 106-34 mark, leaving him tied for sixth on RU’s all-time wins list. He made four NCAA Championships appearances.

The Scarlet Knights’ 184-pounder Rinaldi picked up a hard-fought 3-2 victory in the second round of the consolation bracket against Ty Vinson of Oregon State. Trailing 2-0 heading into the final period, Rinaldi notched a reversal and earned another point as he registered 3:02 riding time to win. In the third round of wrestlebacks, Rinaldi was defeated, 5-2, by No. 11 Mike Larson of Missouri. The senior went 2-2 in his fourth NCAA Championships appearance, compiling a 109-38 career record. His wins rank fifth on the program’s all-time list.

Junior Vinnie Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.) concluded his season in the second round of the 133-pound consolation bracket, falling to No. 11 George DiCamillo (UVA), 4-1. He finished the season with a 27-10 record, making his first NCAA Championships appearance and going 1-2 in the tournament.
