DES MOINES, IOWA (March 21, 2013) – The Rutgers wrestling team will be represented by four wrestlers on the second day of the NCAA Championships inside Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa. All four remaining Scarlet Knights will be competing in round two of their respective consolation brackets.

Led by sixth-year head coach Scott Goodale, RU is currently tied for 35th place with 4.0 points. Penn State leads the team standings with 32.5 points, followed by Oklahoma State (29.0) and Minnesota (24.0). Session III begins at 10 a.m. CT Friday, consisting of quarterfinals and wrestlebacks.

In the championship side of their brackets, redshirt junior 133-pounder Vinnie Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.), senior 141-pounder Trevor Melde (Hewitt, N.J.), senior 157-pounder Scott Winston (Jackson, N.J.) and senior 184-pounder Dan Rinaldi (Lodi, N.J.) all suffered losses in the second round.

Dellefave fell to No. 5 Chris Dardanes of Minnesota before Melde dropped a 6-2 decision to Oregon State’s No. 3 Michael Mangrum. Dellefave meets No. 11 George DiCamillo of Virginia in the second round of wrestlebacks tomorrow morning and Melde takes on Frank Cimato of Drexel. Melde, searching for his 100th career win, lost to Cimato, 9-3, on Feb. 15.

Winston put up fight against top-seeded Jason Welch of Northwestern, nearly pinning him in the third period before falling 6-2. Rinladi battled No. 3 Robert Hamlin of Lehigh, who he had seen earlier in the season, and dropped a 6-3 contest. The two seniors, each making their fourth NCAA Championships appearances, face Matt Lester (Oklahoma) and Ty Vinson (ORST) respectively, in the second consolation round of their weight classes.

Senior Greg Zannetti (Edison, N.J.), sophomore Nick Visicaro (Long Branch, N.J.) and freshman Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) concluded their seasons in Session II. Zannetti, who made his second trip to the NCAA Championships, finished the season with a 27-10 record, including a 91-36 career record. Visicaro concluded the year with a 15-11 mark, making his first NCAA Championships appearance. Smith compiled a 27-11 record in his rookie season.

In the first session on Thursday morning, Dellefave, Melde, Winston and Rinaldi each won their matches.

Dellefave had the highlight win for the Scarlet Knights in session one, taking on 12th-seeded Jordan Conaway of Penn State. Each wrestler escaped once in the initial three periods, sending the match into overtime at 1-1. In the one minute sudden victory period, Dellefave countered a Conaway shot and notched a takedown with 28 seconds remaining to record the 3-1 decision. The Toms River, N.J., native avenged a 6-1 loss to Conaway on Feb. 24.

Melde followed that up with a 5-2 decision over Dean Pavlou of Chattanooga, who he also downed earlier in the season (Dec. 16). Winston took down Andy McCulley of Wyoming twice and came away with a 4-2 decision. At 184 pounds, Rinaldi, tallied a dominating 6-0 decision over Cody Magrum of Ohio State, which included two takedowns.

Visicaro, Zannetti and Smith each fell in the opening round on Thursday morning.
