NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - Senior Greg Austin (Seaville, NJ) became just the ninth wrestler in Rutgers history to reach the 100 win plateau, as he led the Scarlet Knights to a pair of dual meet wins over Franklin & Marshall and Wagner, Saturday at the Collage Avenue Gymnasium in New Brunswick. Austin, who has been sidelined with injuries for much of the season, improved his season record to 9-2 and his career record to 100-37. Rutgers first defeated Franlin & Marshall, 32-6. RU followed that up with a 44-4 win over Wagner. Earlier in the day, Franklin & Marshall topped Wagner 45-0.
“I am really happy Greg [Austin] was able to get his 100th victory at home,” said Rutgers head coach John Sacchi. “He has been a leader for us all along and it is only fitting that he got his 100th win on his home mats.”
The Scarlet Knights began action against Franklin & Marshall. Freshman Dan Hilt (Manalapan, NJ) started things off for RU with a 6-3 win at 125. After F&M knotted the match at three, senior Donnie Defilippis (New Providence, NJ) put Rutgers up for good with a second period pin in 4:23 of Joe Perretta at 141. Austin followed that up with a 9-2 victory over Matt McConnell for his 99th career win.
F&M’s Mike Parziale won at 157 to cut the Rutgers lead to six, but RU won the last five matches to wrap up a 32-6 win. Chris Ressa (Andover, NJ) started the run with a 14-5 win over Ted Seemuller at 165. Andy Roy (Wall, NJ) followed with a 5-0 decision over Nate Schy at 174 to earn his team-leading 16th win of the season. Rudy Medini (Colonia, NJ) defeated Ben Evans, 10-0, at 184, improving his season record to 12-4. Junior John Foscolo (South Plainfield, NJ) won by technical fall at 197 and freshman Ramel Meekins (Westwood, NJ) earned his first career dual meet victory with a 9-0 major decision at 285.
In Rutgers’ second match of the day against Wagner, Hilt again got the Scarlet Knights on the board first. The freshman 125-pounder scored an 18-1 technical fall to put Rutgers up 5-0. After Wagner cut the lead to 5-3, freshman Steve Adamcsik (Chester, NJ) defeated Justin Ensign at 141, 7-3. The win was Adamcsik’s 12th of the season.
Austin picked up his 100th win with a first period technical fall over Dan Gollin in 2:49. Austin used a takedown and a series of tilts to score the 17-0 victory. Freshman Kyle Poulson (Piscataway, NJ) followed up Austin’s win with a first period pin in 1:17. The win pushed Poulson’s team-leading pin total to four. Sophomore Jim Rosinski (Milford, NJ) won his first dual meet match of the season at 165 pounds with his own first-period pin of Vincent Vazzana, to push the Rutgers lead to 25-4.
Wagner forfeited at 174, handing Roy his team-leading 17th victory of the season. Sophomore Dan Cook (Ridgefield, CT) picked up his first win of the season with a 12-3 decision over Alan Moncayo. Freshman Tom Rant (Ocean, NJ) then made his dual meet debut a successful one with a second-period pin over Evan Weber-Junot at 197. Senior John Fleming (South Orange, NJ) closed out the day with a 5-0 decision over John Cichon.
“This was a good day for us,” added Sacchi. “Our starters wrestled well, completely dominating Franklin & Marshall. A lot of our backups had strong showings against Wagner.”
Rutgers returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 21, when it travels to Lawrenceville, NJ, to face Rider at 7 p.m.
