PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 9, 2013) – Five Rutgers wrestlers earned automatic NCAA bids, as the Scarlet Knights finished the EIWA Championships in fifth place at the RAC on Saturday. Led by sixth-year head coach Scott Goodale, RU had eight grapplers place in the top six, its most since the program had eight in 2004.
Cornell won the team title with 142 points, followed by Navy (117.5), Penn (110.5) and Lehigh (101.5). Rutgers totaled 91 points.
In the final session, senior 157-pounder Scott Winston (Jackson, N.J.) and sophomore 165-pounder Nick Visicaro (Long Branch, N.J.) each won their fifth-place bouts, earning them one of the five EIWA automatic bids at their respective weight classes.
Winston, the fourth seed, faced off against sixth-seeded Jesse Shanaman (Cornell) in the fifth-place bout as both wrestlers were vying for a spot at the NCAA tournament. The match went scoreless through regulation. In the one minute sudden victory, Winston notched a takedown with 25 seconds remaining to punch his ticket to the tournament.
Visicaro followed that up in convincing fashion against second-seeded Corey Lear (Bucknell). In the first period, the sophomore took down Lear and put him on his back for a pin just 2:25 into the bout.
Junior 133-pounder Vincent Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.) kept his at-large NCAA hopes alive by finishing in third place, the best finish of any Scarlet Knight in the tournament. He recorded a decisive 5-2 decision over No. 7 Jeff Canfora (Penn) in the finals of the consolation bracket.
In Session III, senior 174-pounder Greg Zannetti (Edison, N.J.) and classmate 184-pounder Dan Rinaldi (Lodi, N.J.) each earned a spot in the NCAA Championships. Rinaldi downed Canaan Bethea (Penn), 7-3, and Zannetti defeated Coleman Gracey (Army), 6-5, in the consolation semifinals to secure their bids. The two advanced to the third-place bout, but fell in the consolation finals, still receiving one of the four allocated spots at each of their weight classes.
The seniors joined classmate Trevor Melde (Hewitt, N.J.), who qualified for one of the seven allocated NCAA spots at 141 pounds yesterday. Melde took sixth place after falling to Anthony Salupo (Lehigh) in the fifth-place contest.
Freshmen 149-pounder Ken Theobold (Hewitt, N.J.) and HWT Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) each took sixth place in the final round, while junior 197-pounder Dan Seidenberg (Red Bank, N.J.) took seventh in Session III.
At least five Scarlet Knights will be back in action at the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, taking place from March 21-23.
