PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 8, 2013) – Senior 141-pounder Trevor Melde (Hewitt, N.J.) qualified for his third NCAA tournament of his career as the Rutgers wrestling team finished Session II of the EIWA Championships in fifth place (74.5 points) at the RAC, Friday. Session III will begin tomorrow, March 9, at 10 a.m. with the consolation semifinals and seventh place bouts. The finals, third place and fifth place bouts will take place in Session IV at 3 p.m.
Cornell leads all teams with 109.5 points thus far, followed by Navy with 94 through two sessions.
Under sixth-year head coach Scott Goodale, six other Scarlet Knights can secure NCAA qualifier spots from the EIWA allocations by winning their consolation semifinal matches tomorrow.
Fourth-seeded senior 157-pounder Scott Winston (Jackson, N.J.), sixth-seeded sophomore 165-pounder Nick Visicaro (Long Branch, N.J.) and third-seeded senior Dan Rinaldi (Lodi, N.J.) need to win just one of their two guaranteed matches tomorrow to finish no worse than fifth place to guarantee them one of the five conference qualifying spots at their respective weight classes.
Freshman 149-pounder Ken Theobold (Toms River, N.J.), third-seeded senior Greg Zannetti (Edison, N.J.) and top-seeded HWT Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) can earn one of the four league qualifying spots by winning their consolation semifinal bouts tomorrow to guarantee them at least fourth place.
Eight Rutgers grapplers have lost just one match in the tournament, guaranteeing all eight to be placewinners as they can finish no worse than sixth place. Junior 197-pounder Dan Seidenberg (Red Bank, N.J.) can place by winning his seventh-place bout in Session III tomorrow. Rutgers had five placewinners last season, including Winston, Zannetti and Rinaldi.
Melde advanced to the semifinals of the consolation bracket, earning him one of the seven EIWA allocated qualifier spots at 141 pounds. He downed Cortlandt Choate of Brown (8-0 maj. dec.), before taking down eighth-seeded Joe Locksmith (Navy) by a score of 3-2. He will take on the second seed, Steven Keith (Harvard), for a chance to be in the contest for third place.
Visicaro, Rinaldi and Smith each made it to the semifinals of their weight classes. Visicaro fell by decision to No. 7 Josh Houldsworth of Columbia, 6-2. He will meet the No. 4 seed Paul Hancock (Army) in the semifinals of the consolation bracket tomorrow.
Rinaldi went up against defending NCAA champion Steve Bosak of Cornell in the semifinal round, falling by a 3-0 decision.
Smith battled fourth-seeded Dan Miller (Navy) in the semifinals. Each grappler recorded an escape in the first two rounds, leaving the score tied at 1-1 heading into the third period. Miller took down Smith with on the edge of the ring with just one second remaining in the final period to earn the 3-1 decision. Smith meets No. 3 Stryker Lane (Cornell) in for a chance to advance to the third-place bout.
Theobold can earn his NCAA qualifying spot by beating the No. 4 seed, Christopher Villalonga (Cornell) in the semis of the consolations.
In the first session, Rutgers advanced three grapplers to the semifinals of their respective weight classes. Visicaro, Smith and Rinaldi all advanced.
Visicaro, who had a bye in the preliminary round, notched an 8-5 decision over Giuseppi Lanzi (Brown) in his quarterfinal bout.
At 184 pounds, Rinaldi earned 12-0 major decision over Harvard’s Josh Popple in the opening round. He downed Popple earlier this season on Jan. 20 to pick up his 100th career victory with an 18-5 major decision. He then defeated sixth-seeded Scott Gibson of Princeton, 4-0, in the quarterfinals.
No. 1 Smith earned an 8-1 decision over eighth-seeded David Ng (Harvard) in his only bout of the opening round.
