PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 24, 2013) – The No. 25 Rutgers wrestling team dropped a 34-0 contest to No. 3 Penn State in the RAC, Sunday. The contest featured four ranked-on-ranked bouts.

The Scarlet Knights moved to 16-4 on the season, while the Nittany Lions are now 13-1 overall. The shutout was the first time RU has been held scoreless since a 37-0 loss to then-No. 15 Ohio State on Nov. 26, 2007. Rutgers gave up just two bonus-point victories to a Penn State team that was coming off a five pin performance against Rider on Feb. 17. It was the fifth shutout of the season for the Nittany Lions.

The highlight match of the day was Scarlet Knight freshman HWT Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.), ranked No. 16 in the country, taking on No. 18 Jimmy Lawson of Penn State. The two went scoreless through the first period. In the second, Smith recorded an escape to take a 1-0 lead into the third. Lawson matched Smith with an escape of his own in the third to send it to overtime.

No points were scored in the sudden victory overtime. In the first tiebreaker, Smith escaped to take a 2-1 lead. Smith battled and held Lawson in a hard-fought second tie-breaker, but the Penn State wrestler notched a reversal with just three seconds remaining to win 3-2.

Seven seniors were honored prior to the match in Senior Day ceremonies; 125-pounder Joe Langel (Howell, N.J.), 149-pounder Mario Mason (Moorestown, N.J.), 141-pounder Trevor Melde (Hewitt, N.J.), 149-pounder Luke Rigoglioso (Wayne, N.J.), 184-pounder Dan Rinaldi (Lodi, N.J.), 157-pounder Scott Winston (Jackson, N.J.) and 174-pounder Greg Zannetti (Edison, N.J.) were all recognized.

The Scarlet Knights are back in action as Rutgers hosts the EIWA Championships in the RAC from March 8-9.
