Knight Notes
• The Rutgers wrestling team (14-3, 6-1 EIWA) returns home to host Bloomsburg (14-2, 3-0 EWL) in College Ave. Gym on Friday, Feb. 8 at 6:30 p.m.
• The Scarlet Knights are coming off a 1-1 weekend on the road, downing West Virginia on Jan. 25 (26-10) before falling to EIWA opponent Navy (19-15) the following day to suffer their first conference loss of the season.
• In his sixth season leading the Scarlet Knights, head coach Scott Goodale holds an outstanding 98-32-1 dual record as Rutgers’ mat leader.
• The Scarlet Knights currently feature three individuals in the national rankings: 141-pounder Trevor Melde (Hewitt, N.J.), 174-pounder Greg Zannetti (Edison, N.J.) and 184-pounder Dan Rinaldi (Lodi, N.J.).
• Winston notched his 100th win against West Virginia becoming the 13th grappler in school history to hit that mark. He joined Rinaldi, who also hit the 100-win mark this season. Rinaldi has 102 career wins, good for a tie for 10th on the program’s all-time list.
• HWT Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) leads RU with 15 dual wins. 133-pounder Vincent Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.) and Rinaldi follow with 14 each.
• Dellefave has won eight consecutive bouts, dating back to a win on Jan. 6 against ASU.
• Rutgers’ lineup features three seniors who have earned qualification for the NCAA Championships in all three seasons of their career. Mason, Winston and Rinaldi have not missed a national tournament.
Rutgers and the Bloomsburg Huskies
• The Rutgers wrestling team holds a 4-7 all-time record against the Huskies and a 0-1 record under Goodale.
• The Scarlet Knights last took on the Huskies in the final dual match of the 2008-09 season on Feb. 20, 2009 and Bloomsburg won 21-13. Rutgers had won the previous two matches against the Huskies. The two squads first met on Jan. 12, 1991.
Scouting Bloomsburg
• The Huskies currently hold a 14-2 record and are an undefeated 3-0 in the Eastern Wrestling League. The two teams have had four common opponents this season including Lehigh, who beat Bloomsburg, 18-12, on Nov. 17. The Huskies hold signature wins over Maryland, Pittsburgh and Edinboro. The only other loss was to Missouri, 22-9, on Dec. 16. The Tigers were ranked. No. 7 at the time.
• Bloomsburg features five wrestlers ranked in the most recent AWN poll, led by junior 133-pounder Nick Wilcox and redshirt junior 165-pounder Josh Veltre, both at No. 11 nationally. 157-pounder Frank Hickman (12th), 197-pounder Richard Perry (15th) and HWT Justin Grant (16th) round out the ranked wrestlers for the Huskies. Hickman advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2012 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
Rutgers Tops WVU, Falls to Navy on the Road
• With the help of five consecutive victories from 149 pounds to 184 pounds, the Rutgers wrestling team put away West Virginia, 26-10, in Morgantown, W. Va., on Jan. 25. Goodale’s squad won seven of the 10 contested bouts and senior Scott Winston (Jackson, N.J.) earned his 100th career victory in a Scarlet Knight singlet with a pin at the 1:58 mark.
• In a tightly-contested match that came down to the last bout of the evening, the Rutgers wrestling team fell to Navy, 19-15, in Annapolis, Md., on Jan. 26. The Scarlet Knights won five of the 10 contested bouts.
