PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Jan. 20, 2013) – In two conference matchups, the Rutgers wrestling team downed Harvard (26-9) in Cambridge, Mass., and Brown (31-12) in Providence, R.I., on Sunday. Under the direction of sixth-year head coach Scott Goodale, the Scarlet Knights won 15 of the 20 contested bouts.
The highlight of the day was senior 184-pounder Dan Rinaldi (Lodi, N.J.), ranked No. 11, picking up his 100th career victory, earning an 18-5 major decision over Harvard's Josh Popple. Rinaldi became just the 12th grappler in RU history to reach that milestone.
Rutgers improved to 13-2 and 6-0 in the EIWA, its best start in league duals since the team went 8-0 to begin conference action in the 2010-11 season. Harvard fell to 2-4 and 0-3 in the EIWA, while Brown moved to 6-4 overall with a 0-3 conference mark.
Freshman 125-pounder Joe Langel (Howell, N.J.), junior 133-pounder Vincent Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.), senior 141-pounder Trevor Melde (Hewitt, N.J.), sophomore 165-pounder Nick Visicaro (Long Branch, N.J.), senior 174-pounder Greg Zannetti (Edison, N.J.) and freshman HWT Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) all went 2-0 on the day. Langel, Melde, senior 157-pounder Scott Winston (Jackson, N.J.) , Zannetti, Rinaldi and Smith all earned one bonus-point victory.
Rutgers won seven of the 10 bouts against Harvard. No. 13 Zannetti earned a 12-3 major decision over Cameron Croy of Harvard, while Melde picked up a big win over No. 11 Steven Keith of the Crimson by fall at the 2:56 mark. It marked his third pin of the season.
The Scarlet Knights won the first seven bouts of the match against the Bears and eight of the 10 overall. Langel started it off with a 10-1 major decision over William Watterson of Brown. Winston and Smith each pinned their opponents, as Winston downed Christopher Howard at the 4:51 mark before Smith recorded the fall over Dillon Ingham just 3:25 into the bout. It was the fourth win by fall for Winston this season and the sixth for Smith.
The Scarlet Knights are back in action on the road, taking on West Virginia in Morgantown, W. Va., on Friday, Jan. 25 at 8 p.m. before heading to Annapolis, Md., to face Navy in an EIWA matchup on Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m.
