PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Jan. 11, 2013) – Despite jumping out to a 12-6 lead, the Rutgers wrestling team fell to Iowa State, 19-15, inside the RAC on Friday night. Sixth-year head coach Scott Goodale’s squad won the first two bouts and the Scarlet Knights won five of the 10 contested bouts.

Rutgers moved to 10-2 overall, while the Cyclones advanced to 2-3.

The Scarlet Knights picked up the first victory of the evening as senior Joe Langel (Howell, N.J.) picked up the 5-4 decision over Iowa State’s Ryak Finch, who was ranked No. 20 in the most recent InterMat poll at 125 pounds.

Junior Vincent Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.) followed that up with an exciting victory at 133 pounds over Cyclone John Meeks. Down 6-5, Dellefave notched a takedown with 0:15 remaining in the final period to secure the decision and give Rutgers a 6-0 lead. In just his fifth dual match of the season, true freshman 149-pounder Ken Theobold (Toms River, N.J.) downed Iowa State fifth-year senior Max Mayfield and held him scoreless with a 4-0 decision.

Directly following Theobold’s win, senior Scott Winston (Jackson, N.J.) posted a 3-0 decision against Logan Molina to give the Scarlet Knights a 12-6 lead. Three bouts later with the score knotted at 12-12, No. 12 senior Dan Rinaldi (Lodi, N.J.) earned a hard-fought 1-0 decision over ISU’s No. 17 Boaz Beard at 184. Rinaldi picked up his 99th win of his career and Winston tallied his 98th.

After Rutgers lost by major decision at 197, the Cyclones took a 16-15 lead heading into the final bout of the evening. Heavyweight freshman Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) took on Iowa State’s Matt Gibson, ranked in two polls, in a back-and-forth match. Smith dropped the 7-5 decision to Gibson as the Cyclones took the match.

The Scarlet Knights continue against Lehigh at home on Friday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. inside the RAC. The Mountain Hawks were just outside the most recent USA Today/NWCA/AWN Division I Coaches Poll, finishing as the top vote-getters.
