PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Jan. 6, 2013) – On the final day of its West Coast trip, the Rutgers wrestling team picked up victories over Pac-12 opponents Arizona State (21-12) and Stanford (33-3) at the Stanford Duals in Palo Alto, Calif., Sunday. Rutgers improved to 10-1 with the help of senior 184-pounder Dan Rinaldi (Lodi, N.J.), ranked No. 13 in the nation, who picked up two wins by bonus points. RU won 15 of the 20 contested matches.
Five other Scarlet Knights reeled in 2-0 records on the day, including junior 133-pounder Vincent Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.), senior 141-pounder Trevor Melde (Hewitt, N.J.), senior 149-pounder Mario Mason (Moorestown, N.J.), senior 157-pounder Scott Winston (Jackson, N.J.) and sophomore 165-pounder Nick Visicaro (Long Branch, N.J.).
Sixth-year head coach Scott Goodale’s squad started off both duals strong, winning its first five bouts of the match with the Sun Devils to jump out to a 15-0 lead. Rinaldi recorded the lone pin of the day, downing Kevin Radford of ASU at the 2:23 mark. He moved his season record to 18-2, notching his third fall of the season. Against Arizona State, three of the four losses for the Scarlet Knights came to ranked opponents.
Led by five bonus-point wins coming from Dellefave, Melde, Winston, Visicaro and Rinaldi, Rutgers cruised to a 33-0 lead over the Cardinal with the only loss coming in the final bout of the evening.
Dellefave started it off with a 14-4 major decision over Stanford’s Alex Manley before Melde tallied a technical fall over Cardinal Josh Lauderdale (19-4) at the 7:00 mark.
Two matches later at the 157-pound weight class, Winston downed Stanford’s Donovan Halpin with a 13-1 major decision. Directly following, Visicaro notched the major decision victory over Bret Baumbach, 13-5. Rinaldi capped the bonus-point victories by shutting out Cardinal Ryan Davies, 13-0.
Also against the Cardinal, Mason come out on top (4-1) for a decision over Timmy Boone in the third overtime, earning an escape and a takedown in the period.
Rutgers returns home to take on Iowa State in the RAC on Friday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m.
