NEW YORK - (December 16, 2012) – The Rutgers wrestling team split dual matches at the “Grapple at the Garden” inside Madison Square Garden on Sunday, falling to No. 14 Nebraska, 22-10, before defeating Chattanooga, 28-12. Led by sixth-year head coach Scott Goodale, the Scarlet Knights’ point-filled effort against the Mocs improved the squad’s record to 7-1 overall in 2012-13. RU was led by redshirt freshman heavyweight Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.), who posted a 2-0 record on the day.
Against No. 14 Nebraska, the Scarlet Knights jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on the Huskers with wins from senior 125-pounder Joe Langel (Howell, N.J.) and junior 133-pounder Vincent Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.). Langel powered to a 9-1 major decision win against Nebraska’s Skylar Wood, ranked 19th in the nation according to Intermat. Dellefave followed at 133 pounds by controlling Shawn Nagel of Nebraska by a score of 9-3.
Rutgers was unable to break through against Nebraska again until the final bout of the dual at heavyweight. Smith turned away NU’s Donny Longendyke by decision, 4-2, to set the final score of 22-10.
The RU-UTC matchup featured three-straight pins from 133 pounds to 149 pounds. Dellefave suffered a defensive fall after being rolled to his back at the 5:35 mark by Chattanooga’s Marvin Lopez. Dellefave was leading 3-1 at the time of the pin.
Rutgers turned the tide in the next two matches with first period pins from senior 141-pounder Trevor Melde (Hewitt, N.J.) and freshman 149-pounder Ken Theobold (Toms River, N.J.). Melde stuck Dean Pavlou of UTC with a 1:17 fall. Theobold pinned Chattanooga’s Alex Hudson in 2:51.
Senior 184-pounder Dan Rinaldi (Lodi, N.J.) also scored bonus points against the Mocs, shutting out UTC’s Robert Prigmore for an 8-0 major decision. Smith closed the dual with a 4-0 decision of Moc heavyweight Kevin Malone.
