PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers wrestling head coach John Sacchi announced that Ramel Meekins (Westwood, NJ), a walk-on football player for the Scarlet Knights in the fall, has joined the wrestling team and will begin competition at the Wilkes Open Sunday-Monday, Dec. 28-29.
“We recruited him out of high school and he expressed an interest to compete in both football and wrestling at the collegiate level,” said Sacchi. “We are excited to provide him with that opportunity and feel he is a welcome addition to our program. He is a very talented and athletic young man.”
Meekins, a freshman, was a two-time All-County and All-North Jersey selection in wrestling out of Westwood High School last season. He was also a two-time Region II and District VIII champion. Meekins placed third in the state during his senior season.
After a standout scholastic career in football, Meekins joined the Scarlet Knights football program in the fall as a walk-on. Meekins climbed the depth chart throughout the season and appeared in five games for RU. He recorded seven tackles, including two solo stops as a member of the defensive line.
The Rutgers wrestling team has competed in two tournaments so far this fall, placing sixth at the Oklahoma Gold/Brockport Tournament (11/15) and fourth at the Navy Classic (11/22). While the team will compete at the Wilkes Open in Wilkes-Barre, PA, this Sunday-Monday, several Scarlet Knights will participate in the prestigious Midland Championships in Evanston, IL, on Monday-Tuesday, Dec. 29-30.
