UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (Dec. 3, 2012) – The Rutgers wrestling team placed seven Scarlet Knights on the podium at the Nittany Lion Open inside Penn State’s Rec Hall on Sunday, with senior 174-pounder Greg Zannetti (Edison, N.J.) leading RU with a runner-up finish off a 4-1 tournament record. Senior 184-pounder Dan Rinaldi (Lodi, N.J.) notched a third-place finish behind a 4-1 mark, including one pin.

Zannetti began his tournament with a 10-1 major decision of NC State’s Patrick Davis, followed by a 4-0 shutout of Huston Evans of Virginia Tech. He then defeated Bloomburg’s Mike Dessino, wrestling unattached, 4-1, and advanced to top Old Dominion’s Billy Curling, 4-2. In the championship bout, Zannetti was unable to top Penn State’s Matt Brown. The 10th-ranked Scarlet Knight, according to Amateur Wrestling News (AWN), was edged by the No. 7 Nittany Lion by a score of 7-4.

Rinaldi rolled in his opening two matches, defeating Army’s Nathan Dow by way of an 11-0 major decision before pinning Michigan State’s Eric Ford in 0:46. He then controlled James Cook of Campbell, 4-1, to advance to the semifinals. Ranked 13th, Rinaldi was narrowly defeated by ninth-ranked Jimmy Sheptock of Maryland, 2-0. In the consolation finals, Rinaldi handled Victor Avery of Edinboro, competing unattached, by a score of 6-1.

At 157 pounds, senior Scott Winston (Jackson, N.J.) placed fifth off a 5-1 showing. He finished his tournament with a 3:43 pin of Penn State’s James Vollrath. Senior 125-pounder Joseph Langel (Howell, N.J.) earned a sixth-place finish, recording a 5-2 mark in his bracket.

Freshman 174-pounder Phillip Bakuckas (Hammonton, N.J.) placed seventh after going 5-2 as an unattached wrestler. Heavyweight Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) also placed seventh, posting a 4-2 record with two pins. At 133 pounds, Vincent Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.) notched an eighth-place finish with a 4-2 showing.

The Scarlet Knights return home on Saturday, Dec. 8, hosting an in-state tri-meet inside College Ave. Gym with both Rider and conference opponent Princeton at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
