PISCATAWAY, N.J. (July 17, 2012) – Rutgers head wrestling coach Scott Goodale announced Tuesday that 14 future student-athletes have made the decision to wrestle “On the Banks” as new Scarlet Knights beginning in the fall of 2012. Seven members of the class were state finalists at their respective weights to finish their high school careers in 2012.
The latest class of Rutgers wrestlers has shown its talents on the national stage. Phil Bakuckas (Hammonton, N.J.) and Maverick Passaro (Eastport, N.Y.) recorded recent fourth-place finishes at the 2012 FloNationals in Philadelphia, Pa., from March 31-April 1. Terrance Jean-Jacques (Haverhill, Mass.) and Anthony Pafumi (West Orange, N.J.) attained multiple All-America honors at past NHSCA Nationals tournaments. Jean-Jacques was second in the country at heavyweight as a junior in 2011 and followed that performance by placing seventh in the division as a senior in 2012. Pafumi placed fifth in the nation at 171 pounds as a junior in 2011 after taking third at 160 pounds as a freshman and sophomore.
Lex Knapp (Lacey Township, N.J.) and Jan Rosenberg (Rockaway, N.J.) also earned All-America status at the 2011 NHSCA Nationals tournament. Knapp placed eighth at 215 pounds, while Rosenberg took top honors at 103 pounds.
Rosenberg added freestyle and Greco-Roman All-America accolades to his record at the 2010 and 2011 Junior Nationals in Fargo, N.D. He placed fifth in freestyle and third in Greco-Roman at 98 pounds in 2010. Rosenberg followed that by placing third in freestyle and fourth in Greco-Roman at 105 pounds in 2011.
Jean-Jacques and Conor Wasson (Mount Laurel, N.J.) placed second in the country at the National Preps Tournament. Jean-Jacques took runner-up honors at heavyweight in 2011, while Wasson’s stellar performance came at 182 pounds in 2012.
Goodale’s group features 10 student-athletes from New Jersey, two from New York, one from Massachusetts and one from Missouri. Sean McCabe (Connetquot, N.Y.) and Passaro won New York state titles at 120 pounds and 126 pounds, respectively. Morgan Fitzgerald (Kearney, Mo.), the grappler hailing from the “Show-Me” state, was one of three recruits in the RU class to cap his career with an individual state championship. Fitzgerald captured his crown at 170 pounds.
“Garden State” natives Anthony Giancola (Collingswood, N.J.), Hayden Hrymack (Lincroft, N.J.), Eric McMullen (North Bergen, N.J.), Jalen Ramos (Bayville, N.J.) and Ken Theobold (Toms River, N.J.) finish the group. McMullen and Theobold were state finalists at 195 pounds and 145 pounds, respectively, to close their high school careers.

State runner-up at the 2012 NJSIAA Championships to finish a 41-1 senior season at 160 pounds … set a new school record with 132 career wins … won District 30 and Region 8 titles in his final prep campaign … named The Press of Atlantic City’s 2012 Wrestler of the Year … scored pins in 24 of his 41 victories as a senior … performance at 2012 state tournament marked the first time a Hammonton wrestler advanced to the championship match … scored a fourth-place finish at the 2012 FloNationals … qualified for the 2011 state tournament … coached by Dave Mauriello.
Morgan Fitzgerald, 174 pounds – Kearney HS (Kearney, Mo.)
Missouri state champion and four-time state placewinner … won 2012 MSHSAA Class 3 170-pound title to finish with an outstanding 54-3 senior season record … recorded back-to-back fourth-place state finishes to conclude his sophomore and junior campaigns … followed his 43-12 sophomore season at 152 pounds by bumping up to 160 pounds and going 41-11 as a junior … placed sixth at 145 pounds in his first MSHSAA tournament, ending a 38-9 freshman season … ranked second in school history with 176 career wins … Kansas City Star All-Metro First Team selection … four-time MWA Academic All-State selection … coached by Chad Hopkins.
Anthony Giancola, 125 pounds – Collingswood HS (Collingswood, N.J.)
Compiled 113-37 career record, winning District 28 three times between 103 pounds and 113 pounds … took top honors in the Region 7 tournament as a senior at 113 pounds … career win total of 113 ranked third in school history … coached by Dechlin Moody.
Hayden Hrymack, 197 pounds – Christian Brothers Academy (Lincroft, N.J.)
Placed fifth at the 2012 NJSIAA Championships, compiling an outstanding 46-2 senior season record at 195 pounds … led the CBA squad with 27 pins in his final prep season … repeated as District 22 champion, advancing to win Region Six … won District 22 as a junior in 2011 after placing third as a sophomore in 2010 … compiled a 31-6 record a junior at 189 pounds … coached by Mike Tomaino.
Terrance Jean-Jacques, Heavyweight – Wyoming Seminary (Haverhill, Mass.)
National runner-up at the 2011 Preps Tournament, competing at heavyweight … wrestled for Wyoming Seminary (Kingston, Pa.) after completing an undefeated, New England championship season for Haverhill in 2010 … runner-up showing at the 2010 NHSCA Junior Nationals … notched stout finishes at the nationally renowned Beast of the East and Walsh Ironman tournaments in 2010, placing second and fourth, respectively … placed seventh at heavyweight at the 2011 NHSCA Senior Nationals … participated in the 2010 Junior Nationals tournament in freestyle … coached by Scott Green at Wyoming Seminary and Brett Legault at Haverhill.
Lex Knapp, Heavyweight – Lacey HS (Lacey Township, N.J.)
State runner-up at the 2012 NJSIAA Championships, recording a stellar 42-1 senior season at 220 pounds … broke school record with his 42 victories in his final season at Lacey … won Region 6 and District 24 titles en route to his state championship bout appearance … named most outstanding wrestler of regional meet … 2012 TCNJ Pride Tournament champion … concluded career with 98 wins, which ranked second in school history … compiled a 25-8 record as a junior at 215 pounds, including a District 24 title … placed eighth in the country at the 2011 NHSCA Junior Nationals to earn All-America accolades … coached by Tom Pfister.
Sean McCabe, 125 pounds – Connetquot HS (Connetquot, N.Y.)
New York state champion, winning the DI title to finish 37-2 as a senior at 120 pounds … national 120-pound runner-up at the 2012 NHSCA Senior tournament … compiled a career record of 175-13 … three-time League II Champion … third-place finish at the 2011 New York DI State Championships … captured 2011 Suffolk County Championship crown at 112 pounds, earning recognition as the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler … ranked No. 192 in D1CollegeWrestling.net’s Top 200 Seniors listing … coached by Bill Santoro.
Eric McMullen, 197 pounds – North Bergen HS (North Bergen, N.J.)
State runner-up at the 2012 NJSIAA Championships to finish a 31-2 senior season at 195 pounds … represented New Jersey in the NJ/NY Charity Wrestling Classic, defeating New York state runner-up Reggie Williams by a 14-2 major decision … two-time District 29 Champion and two-time Region 4 winner … coached by Jerry Maietta.
Anthony Pafumi, 174 pounds – St. Peter’s Prep (West Orange, N.J.)
Two-time NJSIAA placewinner … won three District 16 Championships … scored a third-place NJSIAA Championships finish to cap a 44-3 senior season at 170 pounds … placed third at the prestigious Beast of the East tournament in 2012 … ranked 14th in the country at his weight in Wrestling USA’s Best 2011-12 Seniors … earned All-America honors three times at the NHSCA Nationals, taking fifth at 171 pounds in 2011 and third at 160 pounds in 2010 and 2009 … compiled a 35-5 junior campaign en route to a fifth-place state finish … four-time New Jersey state qualifier … coached by Anthony Verdi.
Maverick Passaro, 141 pounds – South Manor HS (Eastport, N.Y.)

Jalen Ramos, 125 pounds – Central Regional HS (Bayville, N.J.)

Conor Wasson, 184 pounds – Wyoming Seminary (Mount Laurel, N.J.)
National runner-up at the 2012 Preps Tournament, competing at 182 pounds … wrestled for Wyoming Seminary (Kingston, Pa.) after completing a 30-7 junior season at 171 pounds for Lenape, including a fourth-place finish in Region 7 … participated in the 2011 Junior Nationals at 160 pounds in freestyle … coached by Scott Green at Wyoming Seminary and Joe Robinson at Lenape.
