PISCATAWAY, NJ – Days before the 2003 season-opening tournament in Brockport, NY, 12 members of the Rutgers University wrestling team took time out of their busy schedule to participate in National Youth Reading Day.
On Tuesday, Nov. 11, the Scarlet Knights traveled to St. Matthew’s Elementary School in Edison, NJ, to speak and share books with children ranging from kindergarten to the sixth grade.
Teachers would select a book that members of the team read out loud to the class for part of the day. The Scarlet Knights also spoke to each class, answering questions on a wide range of topics. They also demonstrated the importance of education and reminded members of each class the rewards of reading.
Before the day was complete, the students each created cards which included drawings of wrestlers as a thank you for sharing their time with the school.
“I am not sure who enjoyed it more,” said Rutgers wrestling head coach John Sacchi. “Our kids had a lot of fun. It was a great experience for everyone and we were happy to teach these kids the importance of education.”
