PRINCETON, N.J. (March 2, 2012) – Rutgers wrestling notched two No. 1 seeds for the 2012 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships in 149-pounder Mario Mason (Moorestown, N.J.) and 174-pounder Greg Zannetti (Edison, N.J.), as the brackets for the Saturday-Sunday tournament inside Jadwin Gym were finalized Friday. The EIWA Championships, in its 108th year, had its individual positioning determined by the league’s coaches. In total, nine Scarlet Knights from head coach Scott Goodale’s squad were seeded for the tournament that serves as the qualifying event for the 2012 NCAA Championships, held inside the Scottrade Center in St. Louis from March 15-17.
At 125 pounds, sixth-seeded Vincent Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.) is matched in the first round against Penn’s Karim Shafi. Dellefave (12-11) did not meet Shafi during the 2011-12 regular season.
No. 5 Michael DeMarco (Lyndhurst, N.J.) draws Amercan’s Corey Borshoff in first-round action at 133 pounds. DeMarco (18-9) and Borshoff meet for the first time this season in the conference tournament.
Billy Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.), the sixth seed at 141 pounds, is set for an opening round bout with Navy’s Dustin Haislip. Ashnault (20-12) defeated Haislip 5-2 in RU’s 20-19 dual win over the Midshipmen on Jan. 22.
Top-seeded Mason (19-2) will face the winner of No. 8 Kevin Tao of American and Zachary Bintliff of Princeton. The Scarlet Knight recorded wins over both of his potential quarterfinal foes during the 2011-12 season, owning a 3-2 decision over Tao and a 23-8 technical fall (7:00) of Bintliff.
Unseeded 157-pounder Anthony Perrotti (Roseland, N.J.) draws No. 7 Jimmy Rafferty of Army to start the tournament. Perrotti has not faced Rafferty this season after wrestling to a 17-11 record between the 141-pound, 149-pound and 157-pound weight classes.
Second-seeded Scott Winston (Jackson, N.J.) will look to defend his 165-pound EIWA title from a season ago with a first-round bout against Sacred Heart’s Sam Sheppard. Winston (16-5) did not cross paths with Sheppard in 2011-12.
RU’s second No. 1 seed, Zannetti, will take on Army’s Eric Gobin to start the tournament. Zannetti, Rutgers’ wins leader with a 26-3 record, did not face Gobin during the regular season.
