  • NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - The Rutgers women’s volleyball team (6-9, 0-2 BIG EAST) won the first game, but eventually fell short to BIG EAST foe Miami 3-1 (28-30, 30-17, 30-26 and 30-27) on Sunday, Sept. 28.

The Scarlet Knights mixed up the lineup, inserting freshman Lora Yankauskas (Paramus, NJ) to start the game, and jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. The Hurricanes (11-4, 2-0 BIG EAST) took control in the second game, and despite the hard fought effort of the Knights, maintained their composure to secure the victory.

“We committed significantly fewer errors than we did on Friday night,” 10th-year head coach Ann-Leonard House said, referring to a 3-0 home loss to Virginia Tech on Friday, Sept. 26. “I think today the team played a significantly better match overall against a very good team.”

Junior Dawn Christjaener (Huntington Beach, CA) led the Scarlet Knights with 14 kills, while senior Shalya Bush (Spokane, WA) chipped in with 12 kills and a team-high nine digs. Junior Addie Thiry (Louisville, KY) tied a season high with 12 kills, and sophomore Ashleigh Young (Albany, OR) played a significant role on defense with eight block assists.

RU will return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 2:00 p.m. when it travels to South Orange, NJ for a BIG EAST contest against Seton Hall. The Scarlet Knights next home match will be a day later when they entertain Northeastern on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 2:00 p.m.
