  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers women’s volleyball team (6-8, 0-1 BIG EAST) fell to Virginia Tech 3-0 (30-28, 32-30 and 30-26) in its BIG EAST Conference opener on Friday, Sept. 26.

The Scarlet Knights fought back in the first two games, but fell two points shy in each. RU held an 11-3 lead in the third, but the Hokies mounted a furious rally to win the match. Junior Dawn Christjaener (Huntington Beach, CA) led the Knights in kills with 15. On defense, Christjaener, senior Shayla Bush (Spokane, WA) and junior Abbey Martin (Topeka, KS) each contributed seven digs.

Annie Spicer led the Hokies (7-8, 1-0 BIG EAST) with 18 kills, while Melissa Markowski had 39 assists.

RU will finish up its two-match home stand on Sunday, Sept. 28, when it hosts BIG EAST foe Miami at 12:00 p.m.
