ATHENS, GA – After taking care of Furman in its opening match of the Outback Invitational yesterday, the Rutgers women’s volleyball team (6-7) faced Florida A&M and Georgia today, Saturday, Sept. 20, and dropped both matches to finish up the tournament 1-2.
The Scarlet Knights fell to host Georgia (7-5) in the final match of the tournament 3-0 (23-30, 17-30 and 27-30). Senior Shayla Bush (Spokane, WA) and sophomore Ashleigh Young (Albany, OR) led the team with eight kills apiece, and sophomore Courtney Stout (San Marcos, CA) paced the team on defense with 13 digs.
RU lost its first match of the day 3-1 (19-30, 29-31, 30-24 and 18-30) to Florida A&M (7-3). Bush led the Knights with 20 kills and 14 digs while junior setter Abbey Martin (Topeka, KS) contributed 50 assists.
Bush and junior Dawn Christjaener (Huntington Beach, CA) were named to the all-tournament team.
Rutgers will return to action on Friday, Sept. 26, to open up BIG EAST play against Virginia Tech at 7:00 p.m. in the College Avenue Gymnasium.
