  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers women’s volleyball team (5-5) split a pair of matches today, Saturday, Sept. 13, and placed senior Shayla Bush (Spokane, WA) and junior Dawn Christjaener (Huntington Beach, CA) on the Clarion Suites Classic All-Tournament Team.

In their first match of the day, the Scarlet Knights defeated St. Peter’s 3-1 (30-27, 30-21, 20-30 and 30-19) behind Christjaener’s career-high 27 kills and team-high 13 digs. With her 14 kills in the match, Bush moved into fourth place on the Rutgers all-time list.

Rutgers fell to undefeated George Washington (9-0) in the final of the tournament 3-1 (22-30, 30-27, 23-30 and 16-30). Bush had a strong match with 21 kills and 12 digs. Tournament MVP Sarah Hokom paced the Colonials with 20 kills and 12 digs.

“We established our outside attack and we’re solid there, but we need to work our middle and our right side,” 10th year head coach Ann Leonard-House said. “The experience from this weekend will give us what we need to work on in practice to take it to the next level.”

George Washington defeated Delaware 3-0 (30-20, 30-23 and 30-22) in the opening match of the day. Laura Dunning’s 48 assists and Hokom’s 14 kills led the Colonials. Jocelyn Greenwald had 19 assists for the Blue Hens.

Delaware (3-6) won its only match of the tournament by defeating St. Peter’s 3-0 (30-25, 30-18 and 30-15). The match featured 20 service aces, with Megan McGrath of Delaware leading the way with six. Serra Soylu, a member of the all-tournament team, had 12 kills for the Peahens (1-10).

Dunning and Ruth Lazzari from George Washington, and Niecy Taylor from Delaware, rounded out the all-tournament team.

The Scarlet Knights return to action on Friday, Sept. 19, when they travel to the Outback Invitational in Athens, GA. They will take on Furman at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, and then return to the court on Saturday, Sept. 20, to face Florida A&M at 11:00 a.m. and host Georgia at 7:00 p.m.
