HEMPSTEAD, NY – The Rutgers women’s volleyball team (3-4) built on a strong weekend of competition by defeating Hofstra on the road, 3-1, (31-29, 30-25, 20-30, 30-21) in a non-conference match-up, Tuesday, Sept 9.
Senior Shayla Bush (Spokane, WA) led the way for the Scarlet Knights with 19 kills and a season-high 20 digs while junior Dawn Christjaener (Huntington Beach, CA), added a double-double of her own with 18 kills and 11 digs. Providing a strong defensive presence was senior Marilyn Vasquez (Paterson, NJ), who contributed a career-high 16 digs, and sophomore Ashleigh Young (Albany, OR), who chipped in with a career-high nine block assists.
Hofstra (1-6) battled back on several occasions, but the Scarlet Knights refused to relent and held the Pride to a .072 hitting percentage. Rutgers also evened up its lifetime record against Hofstra at 15-15.
RU will make its home debut when it hosts Delaware, St. Peter’s and George Washington at the Clarion Suites Invitational this weekend. On Friday, Sept. 12, the Knights will face Delaware at 7:00 p.m., and on Saturday, Sept. 13, they will return to the court at 1:00 p.m. to play St. Peter’s and at 7:00 p.m. to meet George Washington.
