PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers women’s volleyball competed in a four-team tournament on April 13, facing BIG EAST foes St. John’s and Villanova, as well as Lehigh and Temple. The squad went 3-1 for the day behind a team hitting percentage of .390.
The Scarlet Knights, who finished last season with a 17-11 overall record, 6-7 in the BIG EAST, began the day with a 30-28, 30-23 sweep of St. John’s. The Scarlet Knights completed the sweep of its BIG EAST opponents by defeating Villanova, 30-22 and 30-16. The Scarlet Knights improved to 3-0 on the day after sweeping Lehigh, 30-16 and 30-14. In the fourth and final match of the day, RU fell to Temple, 23-30, 30-21 and 20-18.
Rutgers was led by junior Shayla Bush (Spokane, WA), who hit .342 on the day, with 35 kills and 37 digs, both team highs. Sophomore Dawn Christjaener (Huntington Beach, CA) hit .388 for the day and added 26 kills, 35 digs and three aces. Sophomore Stephanie Travioli (Arlington, TX) led the squad with a .472 hitting percentage, along with 30 kills and 21 digs, while freshman Ashleigh Young (Albany, OR) was second on the team with a .466 hitting percentage, while also contributing 17 kills, four blocks and three aces.
The Scarlet Knights will face a tough schedule in 2003, but will play 11 home matches, including the Clarion Suites Classic, hosted by Rutgers on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 12 and 13. The tournament will also include St. Peter’s, George Washington and Delaware. Last season, the Scarlet Knights played at home just seven times.
